Just got done going through your build theread. You have got some great scenery pics in there. Wish I had a place like that to go wheeling.
Your engine is looking great. Glad to see you got it running. As far as the leaks goes, I dont think you are ever supposed to get it right the first time. At least that been my experience. No matter how hard I try, it still happens, and I have worked on quite a few 22res.
Great build and enjoy your wheeling shots.

Looks great!
To mate the engine to the transmission, did you just use (tons of) general purpose grease on the transmission/spline, and "wedge" it in there until the bellhousing snugged up? And then fastened bolts of course? Is it like when you put on a timing cover and you just wiggle it enough so that the spline on the crankshaft and oil pump line up finally, after a few tries?
Here's another dumb question....the hook on the front of the 22RE is obvious, but where on the back of the engine do you mount the chain for hoisting??

Thanks for the compliments, guys! As far as the install/hoisting goes...no need for a lot of grease on the input shaft (you don't want that slinging all over your clutch), as long as the engine and tranny are at the right angle, they will mate together easily. Dbcfr made it look easy with the help of the leveler on the hoist. My engine hasn't got the hooks any more, and since an incident with an engine coming loose due to a failed hook, I don't really like using them anyway. I use the holes for the M10 bolts, and make sure they are snug. I just feel it's safer to have the chains fixed to the engine.
I put 25 miles on the 4Runner today, and everything looks and sounds good. My oil pressure reads about a quarter higher on the gauge than before, which is nice. I'll put another 300 miles on it this weekend, then mid week I will adjust the valves, re-torque the head, change the oil and flush the coolant. I'm also going to check the plugs to check if it's running rich or lean. I did notice a little quirk in my electric fan controller, so I may upgrade to a better unit. Otherwise, I can't wait to get out on the trails again.

How's it runnin?

I guess it's hard to tell in the pics, but the brackets attached to the chains on the leveler are bolted into the holes where the factory hooks would be. I don't see how it could make any difference bolting another bracket there, in place of the hooks, aside from there being no possibility of the chains coming loose. That is why I always prefer this method, plus I don't like those ugly hooks bolted to my motor.
I drove out of the mountains, into the valley today, racking up about 150 miles on the clock. The engine is running so sweet. I've got a little more noise from the valvetrain, as things are wearing in. The only problem I'm having is resisting the urge to stab the throttle. I'm truly amazed at the power this little motor is putting out, and I can't wait to take it higher in RPM's, and see what it's made of. I read so many different posts, here and other forums, from people running similar setups as mine. Some claim to have between 145 and 150 HP. Anyone care to comment on whether this is realistic? I suppose I should summarize all the engine mods into one post...
22RE Specs
-Block bored .020" over with matched pistons (stock quench)
-ENGNBLDR Street RV Head
-Oversized Stainless Valves
-268C cam
-Balanced Crank, Flywheel, Rods, Pistons, and Harmonic Balancer
-Downey Header with 2.25" Cat Back, Magnaflow Cat, and Flowmaster
-Supra AFM on passenger side
-Stock ignition, Toyota wires, cap and rotor
-NGK V-Power Plugs .035" gap
-Stock intake and throttle body
-Timing at 5 BTDC for now
With all this, do I need to use premium at the pump?

As far as premium gas goes, did you hear any pinging?
You could put a wideband on it once its ready for the throttle to be stabbed, and know for sure.
love that motor...and the set up
any idea's on MPG..
and how long did the motor mounts take to put in, unless you put them in with the motor....

450 miles into the break in period, and about ready to do the second oil change. I ordered Toyota oil filters today, that I'll be using from now on with this motor. Also, I'm going to get a fan control switch like Outsane used on his 4Runner, for my electric fan, so I can eliminate the Hayden controller I have now. Yesterday I had a small coolant leak, from the bypass hose on the lower intake to the throttle body. I got some bulk 5/16 coolant hose and routed it so it has less sharp bends. The hose has to be a custom fit, since my lower intake is off a 90 22RE and the upper intake is the original. I may switch to the later model upper intake in the future, since I read it flows slightly better.
I'm going to try premium at the next fill up, to see if it's any different. The motor sounds completely different than before, but I do hear a little pinging. But, I haven't messed with the timing yet. I'm loving the motor too... As far as mileage goes, I got 20 on it's first long trip out of the mountains (160 miles round trip) with the tires at 26 psi in front and 22 psi in the rear. I aired the tires back up to normal this morning.
Thanks.

holly crap..
I only get about 15mpg....
I need to do some more modding.. so far below are the differences between our motors..
22RE Specs
-Fuel injection (have parts, need fuel pump and time)
-ENGNBLDR Street RV Head
-Oversized Stainless Valves
-Balanced Crank, Flywheel, Rods, Pistons, and Harmonic Balancer
-Supra AFM on passenger side (I have an Supra AFM may need to swap internals)
-NGK V-Power Plugs .035" gap
-Timing at 5 BTDC for now
-209K miles

In a perfect world, I'd find a smokin' deal on some TC longtravel, or maybe go with Blazeland. Time will tell, I suppose. The money I started to set aside for suspension is now under the hood, so I'm back to square one again. I do plan on swapping F150 springs in the rear sometime soon, but the front will have to wait. Thanks for the compliments.
