Slammed passenger door, now won't start
this one is for anyone else who happens across this strange circumstance.
This weekend, for the second time, a series of events occurred
1. Wife jumps in the passenger seat
2. "Dang, don't need to slam the door"
3. dash lights up fine, relay clicks, truck won't start
4. come back a few hours later, it starts fine
The first time it happened a few months ago I replaced the starter (probably pointless I now realize) and shrugged off the door slam thing.
This time, I knew it was not a coincidence, and started scratching my head.
Eventually, I slammed the passenger door with the hood open, and viola, the battery shook like a leaf
A thorough cleaning of the battery terminals, and everything is fine. AND I think it fixed my hard start issue. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...-start-299139/
I have no idea what the likelihood is of a battery getting in perfect condition such that it repeatably won't start after closing the pass. door, but repeatably WILL a few hours later, and also still lets the relays click, but not enough juice to move the starter... but I'm guessing this is a pretty unlucky thing to try to troubleshoot...
So, if someone find this after their first 1st or second 2nd gen toyota truck or 4runner won't start after slamming the passenger door, check your battery terminals before you do anything else.

during that process you will also find out of the thermostat is an issue. A sticking tstat will cause the coolant to boil with the cap off and when that stat opens late will flood coolant out of the filler neck like crazy.
i had a huge mess in my garage floor from that happening.

Started to tell her about this post...
"I DID NOT SLAM THE DOOR!"
"You shut it hard enough the car wouldn't start."
"I may have shut it with more force than you deem necessary."
"The term 'slamming' implies negative intent......"
Then she ranted about the connotation of the word slam for 10 minutes, lol
These doors are way easier to close than her '05 Escape.
I'm just glad she actually loves the truck

what size cooper tires did you go with?
i love the look of my 32s but the trade off in effective gear ratio sucks! And i am not about to spend the money on 4.56's.

And i got 31s (265/75 i think). I've never had anything else on it to compare to, but it seems OK to drive to me. Just cruise in 4th gear for the most part

Your panels look much better than the woodgrain!
I see your truck has cruise control. Is there an additional "stalk" coming off the steering column for that?
It looks like the PO of my truck tried to install cruise control parts. there is an extra stalk dangling near the column. can't quite figure it out.

I don't know anything about the factory cruise, I got the button off ebay because I plan to install an aftermarket system and use the button, it's not connected to anything yet

Very interesting. If I cannot figure out my PO cruise control, I plan to UN-install it. Maybe you can use it.

I'm thinking of an electric system, push the button to set, push again to cancel, and delete whatever stick it comes with
I dislike stalks

Starter woes
Since cleaning my battery terminals, the starter has given me no trouble until yesterday. It fires right up every time.
yesterday I parked at the hardware store, then it wouldn't start. Lights and radio come on, i can hear the relay and I think solenoid click, and nada. Tried cleaning the battery terminals, no change. Disconnected the heavy gauge line that runs right to the starter from the battery, no change, so the starter is either stalled, or not getting power.
Then I got a bump start, got home to troubleshoot, and the damn thing fires right up like nothing ever happened.
The aftermarket starter is only 3 months old. Either I have an intermittent failure in the starter, or the power line to it.
Unsure if I should spend time cleaning all the connections, or cut to the chase and get a rebuilt OEM starter and ditch the POS aftermarket one.
Will probably clean the terminals first, because it's free, but a new starter would also give me peace of mind that I'm not going to get stranded again
Opinions welcome
This post is mostly documented complaining

Napa gold filters aren't bad, but any reason you chose not to use a Toyota one?
An eBay seller has a 10-pack listed that I've bought twice already. If you're interested, as of this posting it's $34.50 for the box with a bag of crush washers. Part number is 90915-yzzd1.

EDIT: Another thought, next time it does it grab a jumper cable and go from batt(-) to block and see if that cures it.

Another thought- Next time it does it try this test. Take a jumper cable and go from BATT(-) to the block and see if that solves it.

You probably want to read about RAD4Runners starter mod. I know on my 88 I would periodically get the click no start. I bought a used Denso starter, put in fresh contacts, nothing completely eliminated the problem until I did Ray's mod. I did it prob 5 years ago and it has never happened again.

Napa gold filters: just a habit, should probably get a cheap box and save money
I'll check my ground wiring, thanks for the tip, i hadn't thought about it since I knew it grounded to the block
The starter relay is only 87 and up, 86 and older don't have that issue (i checked mine awhile back)

DANG! I just noticed these rims. Beautiful, understated and tasteful!
Yes. If automatic, need to add a starter relay. If manual with starter relay, the relay is guaranteed to have been WIRED WRONG IN THE FACTORY. Need to re-wire for $11 bucks worth of materials and about half-hour work. Then your wife can slam the door all she wants and not affect cranking - LOL!
