so i stopped by lowes and picked up some snap fasteners. the male side has a screw in it to attach to the homemade bracket, and the female side is like a regular fastener like a rivet where it holds the canvas in place. the instructions inform me that i need to drill a 1/8"hole into the material (steel) and screw it into place. of the 6 that came in the package, 2 broke off. i went back to lowes, told them what happened and got another set. same thing happened. i even tried drilling the hole slightly larger which you guessed it, to big. i then went to michaels (arts/craft store) and picked up some regular style snap fasteners and found that the fasteners post? the part that attaches the 2 pieces together is to short. i cannot find a snap fastener with a longer post to make this work. getting bit by mosquitoes and the sun now gone made it even worse to work on. if you know of another place that sells a longer shaft fastener id really appreciate it!

finished project
original fastener used was a 1/4in hex self tapper. this is to tall for the snap fastener and wil not work
#8 1/4in phillips head screw does the trick.
contour of the aluminum flat bar i used along with the brackets i made out of steel that bolt to the factory bolt locations on top. the brackets are 2in long 1in wide and 1/8in thick. i drilled an 1/8in hole for the screws and the bottom side has a hole large enough for the topper bolts to go through. this was flat steel that bent with a vice and a hammer.
snap fastener kit from michaels (arts/crafts store) the snaps and punch tools were about 10 dollars. i used the tool for the female side through the fabric, the male side i used the screws as the rivet style connection was to short to go through 2 pieces of metal.
this is the bostitch fastener kit i got from lowes that broke off when it hit the steel 4 times. i used an impact drill the first time and a screw driver the last 2 times and gave up. the instructions say to drill an 1/8in hole in the material you are attaching them to. steel is not a material these will bolt to. this is where ace hardware came into play with the #8 phillips head screws.
bracket installed. this has the hex head screws which i swapped out for the phillips head screws.
well ive spent the past 2 days dealing with this and mosquitoes. it wouldnt be so bad i had i saved my password on here and lost that entire write up. i need a beer i feel like this dude. have a good night.

Did some fishing yesterday and caught a few nice ones. Crappie was about 12in long, first bass id guess 3-4lbs. In the background is my yota that just happened to start some clutch slipping. I have a spare disc/pp and a friend has a flywheel lathe so hopefully I can get this fixed for little to nothing.
