JusToyotAdkins' 1986 Toyota 4x4 Build
Hello everyone(I'm new to this forum), it all started out when my dad gave me his 86 toyota pickup 2wd. I love driving that truck everywhere and so i wanted something that i could drive anywhere! So i came across a 86 pickup 4wd that my friend had sitting in his yard. The next week after that, I bought it! She's quite rough around the edges but i just had to have it. This will be my build thread and i hope some of you follow along to teach me your tips and tricks.
Here is the truck right before i went to pick it up.
Right before we unloaded her
I had to pressure wash the crap outta this thing!
And removing the engine because the previous owner slung a rod and put a hole in the block.
That's it for now!

I have fixed worse. Looks like you have a solid truck to begin with. I will say with all of the debris sitting on the windshield cowl, I would suggest pulling the cowl and getting your ventilation system cleaned out. That gets over looked. Stuff probably got down in your blower motor as well. You can pull the front mud flaps and loosen the inner fender and find more trash there. That will be a sign of debris that is inside the truck. There will be others that will help you along the way. On my 88 Runner build link below will be some information that can help you on the first post of where to find some common issues.
These are some easy trucks to fix, just takes a little time and effort and you can have it going in not time. Looking forward to your build and welcome to Yotatech.

Thanks for the heads up @Terrys87. I'm supposed to be going to picknpull this weekend to hopefully find quite a bit of parts. The PO had let someone use it as a parts truck and took a lot of the electrical goodies.
And thanks, @junk4u. Yeah im planning to make this a fun little truck

Welcome to Yotatech, it sounds like you've been bitten by the yota bug, from which there is no cure, lol! It looks like a nice solid truck to start out with! Whats your plan for a motor? Look forward to seeing your progress!

I'm wanting to throw another 22r in it. I really like that motor. Maybe throw a cam in it and put on a weber carb.

Well i put in some more work today..
Took off that ugly rear bumper, had to grind off the bolts because they were ceased on from rust build up. I plan on putting on a roll pan bumper in replace.
Got the ugly shaggy carpet removed along with the 2 tons of dirt embedded into it.
What you guys think about putting that painted on bedliner for the floor??
Getting rid of this bench seat and put in some bucket seats in the future.
Gonna have to find a bed that's in better shape than this one.
Will the 90's model pickups bed fit these trucks???
Pressure washed the engine bay and starting to get it ready for when i get another motor.
Here's the mileage of the rig
Last for today, this is what i'm currently driving. A 1986 pickup 4 speed, with a weber carb.

I miss my little two wheel drive truck. I had an 4 speed tranny in it and stuck an 84 Celica 5 speed tranny. It bolts right up with no modifications if you want a little more speed and mileage.

I like the sound of that! I may have to try that one day. Thanks for the tip!!

Glad to see you bringing another Toyota back to life. My two sense to begin with. Is is a long bed or short? If it is a short bed you shouldn't have much trouble at all finding a replacement. If it is a long bed, that gets sketchy. I have a 87 Pickup. Extra Cab, Long bed. I restored the truck about a year ago and had rust issues in the bed. Mine wasn't near as bad as yours but I was right on the line of having an unfixable bed. Luckily I found a skilled body man that was able to re-weld the back of the floor and fiberglass the rest. It has held up extremely well so far. I am still fighting a bit of rust right at the seams but not much can be done about that because of the design. If you can find a bed in good shape I would snatch it up quick because they are hard to find. Good luck on your project, looks like fun.
I love your 86, solid truck. BTW how do you like the weber carb? Which one do you have?

@Caudleej it's a short bed and will a earlier 90s bed fit? And I love the weber. I could tell some difference in performance and it looks cleaner under the hood. It's a 36/38 I believe.

As far as I know the frames on the early 90s trucks are basically the same even as the body style transitioned into a more round look. The only issue you might have is with the fuel receptacle fitting but I don't foresee that really being much of an issue. Another option you might consider is a Pre-86 bed with the rails like on your 2WD because they do not have seams like the 86-90s beds therefore rust will be less of an issue.
For your grill Junkyards are always an option but I have found that eBay sells them pretty reasonably. If I recall I bought mine for around $40.
Good luck.
