You mentioned you need to find a location, how much space will you need? And if sense the hi and lo speed power, will you need two separate units.

two separate circuits, yes. the "location" i'm looking for is for where to mount the led's in the cab. i don't want to just drill a hole anywhere, so i'm going to see if there's an open indication slot on the gauge cluster. the size of the sensor is tiny, and mounted on the fan cord, it's only about an inch in every direction.

there are basically 5 parts to this circuit: sensor, pull-up resistor, led, ferrite choke, and wire. nothing else

you could find a location for the LED that will light an area indirectly, like under the dash aimed at your feet. I say this because you don't want an LED focused at your face, it will be annoying. For now mine lives under my radio, and illuminates the floor, and filler panel that is perforated aluminum and lexan. I sanded the lexan to give it a frosted appearance , but still let light thru. I'd like to use two different color LED for hi and lo speed, so it would be easy to see the difference.
I was going to drill a hole, but the LED kicking on and off is distracting, the LED is simply for glancing at to make sure it's kicking on when it should, after a while i don't even realize its on.

i'm one of those wierd people that likes the indication where it's front and center. also, i'll be able to see it in daylight. and i can always find another location if need be

just searched around a bit, and found a way to make a common cathode (most common) into a common anode (less common). and better yet, i have all the parts at home

awesome, but you say you have all the parts, you mean just for the anode cathode swap? Not the switch..

right. i still need the sensor, choke, actual led, and a few resistors. but i could have it done in a week or two. i'm going through the mouser catalog now

actually, it should be cheaper that way. i'll order 5 of everything (4 individual circuits and 1 spare).

now the big question: what type/color led's do you want?

Makes no difference to me, i was going to get a single bi, but i am actually running two LEDs cuz i couldn't find the bi i bought.

custom ammeter, light-out indicator, security system, and i'm sure there's more

one thing i realized with the circuit: if the fan kicks on while driving down the freeway, but the air is already turning the fan, this circuit might not sense it. i'll play around with that.

aaand the price up there is too high, actually. i have 2 led's in there for one circuit, so the cost should be $2.25
