Evan's 1993 Pickup
I have a 1993 Toy 4x4 PU that I am the original owner of. The PU has been sitting for 2 years. The PU has 115K Original Miles on it. I want to get this thing back into safe driving condition. The truck starts with a jump, drives but sounds a bit off. It's carburated etc. I need to drive it from Sac over the Tahoe Forest pass to Reno about 150 miles but fearful of it dying. It has had fuel sitting in it for 1 year. What do I do? Also where do I start by getting this truck back into decent reliable condition? The vehicle is clean meaning no rust damage or beat run damage but there's lots of moving parts that have not moved. I do not want to take it to a dealership for an overhaul. Any experts in this really cool type of vehicle? Thanks
This is the truck. Any advise or where to find info on how to get it in solid running condition would be great.

I have seen enough of these trucks from what previous owners and age does to them. Most is easily fixed. I would start with a good tune up (fuel filter, air filter, plugs wires, cap and rotor), clean up the Intake system as the EGR causes a lot of carbon build up in them, and find out what all the other previous owners have done to them and get those issues corrected. Since you don't know the history of this truck and it has been sitting, just start from the very beginning and basics and see what comes up. Check to see if all hoses are routed correctly, are free from carbon build up and sensors can use a good scrubbing, a brass tooth brush will make quick work of that with out harming the sensors.
Start checking and changing the fluids in the transmission, transfer case, and axles. Once you get it running, you are going to find some things that are going to need to be looked at and repaired.
Stay with factory parts. Some parts can be bought at the dealer for the same price as a part store and is much better quality. Other parts can be bought online.
Even though my trucks are the previous generation, most everything is nearly the same as far as the mechanics side of things. On my build thread links below in my signature, on the first page, I tried to post information on ways of cleaning, fixing, or repairing things.
When you find information, that interest you, copy the link to your thread and it makes a quick way of finding the information for you at a later time. Numerous of times I just stumbled into information just by reading other threads or post. When I am in a bone yard, I use those trucks for learning on.
Really the only difference between your generation of truck and mine is how to get the dash apart. Start on the passenger side and work your way over to the drivers side. You will have a few more emissions to deal with but is mostly hoses. Everything else is basically the same.
The one thing that concerns me is you say it is a 93. I was thinking 92 was the last year of carburetors but I could be wrong on that. If some one took an efi truck and made it a carbureted truck, from what I have seen in the past, that is a butcher job.
I have converted trucks from carb to efi and vise versa and with what I am understanding with your experience, you should stay away from something like that until you get a better understanding of these trucks if they tried to convert your truck to carb and it was an efi in the past.

Thanks for responding Terry87. I am the actual original owner. I bought the truck from the dealership new in 93. I held onto it. We drove it intill the fuel filter clogged, then had great difficult trying to change it because of where it was located. Then I drove it again for several yrs and let it sit for 1 year. What would you do immediately to get it from the storage unit where it's sitting to a place where I can work on it. The distance is about 200 miles from where its stored to where we can get to cleaning it up. Do I need to drain all old fuel? Is there fuel stabilizer to put into the tank?, Should I drive it to JiffyLube in the town it's sitting and have them do the fluids? My home and garage is 200 miles away from the truck? Should I tow it until I get all the work done. Maybe its EFI... I think most likely it is. Thanks again. The truck only has 115K on it and I am hoping that my 17 yr old will have a vehicle to drive to the JC next year? Maybe. Thanks for your info.
