And guess what...

Three of the exhaust manifold studs were stripped out on the head

So it was time to break out the drill and Helicoil

When I had the turbo out I installed a longer section of vacumn tubing so that I can add an adjustable boost controller later. You can see the old hose next to the new one.

And everything starting to get re-installed

The old spark plug wires got cooked and brittle from the exhaust leak. So I got a new set wires and some spark plug boot protectors.

The old ones

And the new ones and boot protectors

I like what you're doing. Really thoughtful and logical. And you do good work.
Way to go. Keep all the ideas coming.

I work at a place and have access to 12V LEDs and am thinking about using them under the hood. If that goes well, I will try them in the back cargo area.

they CAN work, the only problems that ive run across, at least in the Scion community, is that LEDs are monodirectional... you can shave down the domed tip of the LED, if thats the kind that you are using, but the only way to make the light cover a wide area is to put multiple LEDs everywhere, which might not be a bad idea... wire them all into the heat matting under the hood...

hmmm... this gives me ideas...

I also built an exhaust this weekend, I'll post the pictures in a little bit.

I used the stock manifold, there is only one aftermarket header/manifold (that I know of) for the stock CT-20 turbo. HERE LC Engineering makes it and it seems to be a great product but the price is way out of my budget.

I need to learn to weld and other things...You have done more in less than a month than I have done in a year and half on my build..
I check back every few days and am amazed at the progress. Nice!

Thanks, it seemed to make a big differance. I think the cam gear helped a bit, I set it at 5 degrees advanced, which was the same setting I had on the old 4Runner. Advanced will give you more power at lower RPM's and retard more at higher RPM, it goes all the way to 10 in both directions. Although I changed a lot of things at once, it seems to have more power in the mid range RPM. I would have liked to do one thing at a time to see how each thing worked, but I did not have the time and the turbo piping has to be pulled to get under the valve cover.

Thanks, I've built a few Toyota's and have a good idea of what works and what does not. I also feel that the details are what makes a rig

I like your idea of using LEDs. Roundeyes makes a LED rock light kit that seems to work pretty well, you might what to see what kind of LEDs they use and how they place them for the best light.

It turned out looking nice . I painted the valve cover and the turbo intake pipe, the engine has low miles on it so it's still pretty clean. I do like the adjustable cam gear, the details of where I set it, etc are above.

Welding is one of, if not the most important thing I learned how to do (when it comes to building a vehicle). My high school never offered it and I really wish they would have. A couple years later I ended buying a 110 Lincoln, and a book on how to weld, then I tought myself. It took a lot of practice and I have a good friend that is a welder that gave me some pointers over the years. Every time I weld I think I learn something and get a little better, it's all about practice.

I really want the thing to be done by this spring, so I have been keeping busy on it. This is also my only vehicle, so it has to be up and going for the work week. Some times it sucks to be rushed, but at least things get done.

I also got started my exhaust this weekend. The old system didn't have a flex (really bad for a turbo) and it rubbed on the crossmember. It was made out of an old F-350 system. The system hung a bit low and the muffler was HUGE for a 4Runner.

The old system

It was getting late so I didn't take many picture while building it. I still need to make the tailpipe for the rear section, I ran out of time and didn't have a clear idea of how I wanted to route it.

The old system was 3" so I stayed with that (back pressure is not much of an issue on a turbocharged vehicle), and I ordered some parts from Summit Racing.

I started with:

2 - U-Bends
1 - Flex
1 - 4' section of straight tube
1 - Summit Turbo muffler
2 - Fancy clamps

And this is what I came up with (don't mind oil leak)

And the clearance under the vehicle

i like the fancy clamps. how does the muffler sound? i've got one in my garage, but decided to keep the flowmaster 40 instead. a sound clip would be very cool...

In the old 4Runner I moved the exhaust up a lot more, but I had to notch out the crossmember. Also, it was so close to the body that the heat from the exhaust melted the tar insulation ofn the floor (by setting it on fire ), but it never touched a rock.

The exhaust hangs down a little more than I like, but I'm working on finding a middle ground on his build. I can always build a little skid plate or something if I need to.

The adjustable cam gear works well with other mods. It's easy to mess around with and find a setting you like. On a non turbo 22R I would not go any larger than 2 1/4 exhaust tubing, you loose a lot of lower end power.

Do you live in Bend, OR?

The clamps are really nice, a bit expensive but it's nice to be able to take apart the exhaust nice and easy without dealing with gaskets.

The muffler sounds nice. The old 4Runner had a 40 series and it was bit loud for my liking (I ran the exit of the exhaust thugh the body, less than a foot away from the drivers door and it was really loud ). I still need to build a tailpipe section, which should make it sound a bit better. It's no where near as loud as the 40 series, but the turbo does change things a bit.

thats what i have been thinking size wise.. right now its got a downey header.. to what looks to be the stock cat.. and a real old rusted almost to non exsistence flowmaster. on my 85 i had 2 1/4, stock manifold, high flow cat and a magnaflow and i reall loved the way it sounded.. to this day i have yet to hear anther rig that sounds like it did, but i have a baiscally new 40 flowmaster sittin out in the shop that i may throw on with some new tube and a high flow cat.... though i wish i lived in Bend i dont... i live in Boring... (really its the name of my town) its about 10/15 miles east of portland.. we have had alot of urban expansion in the area the last 5 years, kinda sucks cause when i was little boring was considerd the "country"... now its got a fancy new term ... the "gateway to the mountain" (mount hood) lol

I was wondering because I just took a trip out there last month. I have a buddy that lives in Bend so the GF and I flew in to Portland. We rented a car, drove the 101 and spent a couple days on the coast. Then we made our way over to Bend, spent a couple days checking the place out and did a little wheeling. On the way back to Portland we went up to Mount Hood, then to Hood River and back to Portland. Oregon is an awesome place, there's so many differant areas, the whole time I wished I had the old crawler.
