how often do you typically have too tare into the front axle?

So, I'm just dealing with repercussions of a previous error. I had the clogged breather blow the wimpy trail gear inner axle seals out. I didn't notice that the gear oil was leaking out on the inside of the wheel for a while, but gear oil+grease isn't a good lubricant. I had wheel bearings left over from an earlier project, so I didn't order a axle rebuild kit because money was tight. I took the front axle down, cleaned everything and greased and assembled, only replacing the wheel bearings. I could see the trunion bearings weren't in great shape when I cleaned them, but I didn't have time or money as it is my DD. So, I greased and assembled hoping they would be alright, but obviously another 5k miles and they are shot.
Anyways, guess I'll be ordering a rebuild kit and replacing them.

So, typical service life of the trunion bearings should be pretty long, but I've seen a lot of sets of knuckles and IFS spindles and almost all of them show wear on the wheel bearing race surface on the spindle. So, obviously people are running them past their service life. That, or they are losing their preload and the slop is causing the wear. I think Wheel bearings should be replaced every 100k and while I'm at it, I'd do the trunions too. That's just my opinion though. Of course things like blown inner axle seals can throw a monkey wrench in that.

The up shot is that once you've taken the axle apart once, it is quite easy to do it again.

When I took mine apart the first time it was all factory original with 170k miles and it definitely was in the NEEDS to be done category. I don't know if that is more a factor of time than miles though it was 30 years old then.

i rebuilt my front 3 years ago and haven't had to touch it again. i check for bearing play before every trip and haven't had any trouble yet surprisingly, even with 1.5" spacers and 35's

Well I can say this much, IFS is certainly less maintenance prone then a SFA.

I'll be glad to have my parts together this June. I can't wait to wheel this truck.

What kind of info are you looking for? I to have a flow chart for the turbo ( https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post51817964 ), but do you have other questions regarding the K03?

thanks for the link,
i was hoping to find a good write up about turbo'ing a 7mge, but most posts i've seen say don't do it. I'm pretty green when it comes to anything relating to turbo's so its probably not something i will take on unless i can find detailed info about how to do it correctly and safely.

For those who say, "do not turbo a 7mge"; are the same individuals who are thinking of a classic turbo setup. A classic turbo setup is typically a low compression motor with a 12psi induction pressure, and a 12:1 Air to Fuel ratio; hence, thinking of turboing a 7mge with that kind of thought in mind is a bad idea. The reason the classic method is so bad, for the 7mge, has to do with the fact the the 7mge is a high compression motor. High compression motors, and high pressure induction lead to pre-detonation of the fuel, which will break a any engine.

The cures for pre-detonation:
-lower the air to fuel ratio (Stock would 14.7:1)
-raise the octane rating of the fuel used
-lower the induction pressure
-cooling the air charge in the induction system

So, turboing a 7mge properly and safely would only require running low, induction pressure, and possibly fueling the engine with a higher octane fuel, while cooling the charged air; that is the theory, the rest is just plumbing.

When doing a search for "Blazeland" you are probably coming up with hundreds of threads these days. I am creating a keyword to threads that are pertinent to the subject. Type in "Blazelander2013" to see threads that are heavy on the Blazeland topic.

I've been slacking off far too long, and have been deeply depressed with my life (no joke, I have been truly clinically depressed for several years now).

Good news though, after meeting up with Spacejunk and Mak-92 last night, I did some work on my rig today. I picked up the nuts and lock washers that I need to finish installing the Six-shooter knuckles, and bolted up the spindles. I now need to put the rotors/ calipers on and the rig will be sitting on all four wheels again.

It was cool to hang out with you two again Troy, and Mike. I look forward to next Saturday. Although, you should come visit at my place, the pool is worth it Troy.

I'm actually thinking of driving up to Squaw Ridge in the Supra to find out once and for all if the trail is closed. I'll take my mountain bike on the trail to make the most of the day.

I got the passenger side front all torqued and buttoned up. The tire is on and I removed the jackstand from beneath. Tomorrow I will have the driver side finished, and the rig will once again stand on its own feet.

Yes, it is exciting, and if everything works out I may even get a chance to wheel it this season.
Here is the rig all torqued down and complete.

I have only driven the rig once, and that was when I drove it home from purchasing it. I parked it in the driveway and there it has sat since April of 2013. Hence, the new rig does not truly feel like it is mine at the moment.

That's how it went for me when I first got my 4runner, when I first bought it a buddy of mine drove it to my house, me following in my truck, (the 22re had a blown head gasket, had a leak in the radiator, had to keep stopping and adding water, and 3rd gear didnt work) Then I parked it and did the V8 swap and SAS. It was almost a full year before I ever got to drive it for the " first time" lol.

Nice looking rig, look forward to seeing some wheeling pics soon!

I am looking forward to posting up some wheeling pictures. But next on the list has to do with addressing the worn shackles and bushings. I will have pictures of that repair coming soon, but I must paint the shackles first.
