do the bearing anyways. the gear fluid washes out the grease in the bearing. its not worth it to not do it

I thought maybe he thought that inside the diff that the 3rd member bearings might have been fluid starved and ran dry and ruined from the outside seal leaking for a while,
On the rear axle outside bearings use grease like it's sealed or does the outside axle shaft bearing lubed by the gear oil? I thought it was lube continully by the diff 90 weight gear oil?
I've never had the pleasure of having to do axle work except for brake rebuild. Wheel cylinders and pads and spring kit and new drums... easy peasy there :}

wheel bearings are sealed and has its own grease that lubes it. if gear oil leaks past seal. the wheel bearing imo is done. why risk it

I knew the leak was there for a while, and after cleaning the diff breather, I ran it for while. Then I decided to check it again to see how much fluid was left and I had to add a quart to get it full again.

When I got the axle back from the shop, they had removed the brake components and didn't put it back. I never replaced drum brakes. That sucked, took me about an hour to finally get stuff on. lol

Yeah, my bearing was toast. There was so much play it was pretty crazy.

So at work, I went on a parts run and I noticed my Battery Light and E-Brake Light were both on. I was definitely worried, but my engine was still running so I got the stuff and came back. When I went on another drive, it went away. I read that both those lights will come on if there's a charging issue.

I figured it was just a wiring issue, but then it came on again today after school. It would go away if I had the engine rev'd up, but that only worked for about 10 min. So I was pretty sure it was the alternator going out. Luckily, even after getting some welding equipment for my class and getting an alternator at NAPA I still made it home. Only took about 25 minutes max to replace.

Yeah, I ruled that out on mine because I got a new one not too long ago. So far, the lights went away and everything has been good since I replaced the alternator.

Ok, so back after I replaced the alternator, I watched it as the engine was running just to check to see if the belts were running smoothly. Fortunately the fan caught my eye, because I noticed it wobbling a bit.

At first, I was going to let it slide because I thought, "oh well, no big deal", but then I decided to search around yotatech because it was bugging me a bit haha. After reading the horror stories, and especially after watching a video another user posted of his wobbling like crazy, I knew it had to be replaced before it got real bad.

Anyways, so I went out to check the fan, wobbling it as I rotated it around. The bracket is not moving at all, which is good, so I'm assuming it's the bearing in the fan clutch. So I ordered a new fan clutch from RockAuto, I normally would get one from NAPA, but the fan isn't wobbling that bad right now, and I've heard good things about RockAuto. They seem to have good quality parts, and I think I got a good one that's made by BECK/ARNLEY.

I guess we'll see next week when it comes...

The fan clutch I ordered from RockAuto was $61.79. Should get here Thursday probably.

Yeah I'll get some pictures and stuff. I always do, helps me remember what I have done and it's cool to look back on.

I'm gonna try not pulling the upper radiator hose while doing the install. I've read someone on here has done it like that, but I guess I'll find out how that will go pretty soon.

another trick you can do is drain some of the coolant, even save it to reuse. this will allow you to remove the upper hose without losing any coolant

Yeah, I can do that. I removed the fan before a long time ago, I just can't remember if there was room to get the fan out by itself. Well, I highly doubt it anyways, it looks impossible. So yeah, I'll probably be doing what you said.

Here's a picture back in high school when I did belts for the first time. I thought the fan had to be removed to replace them. Looks like I wasn't able to remove anything without removing the upper radiator hose. Man, I made a mess, I probably didn't even drain the radiator from the drain plug first lol.

wow thats too funny. i know when i 1st started. i hated fishing the belts thru the fan. the coolant trick works. i do it all the time at work when i just need to remove the upper hose to do T-belts

Cool, then I'll be doing that then. I can't wait 'til the fan clutch gets here. I feel like I have a grenade waiting to explode in the truck every time I go to work and school. I'll be keeping my eye on it though.

I will, thanks. My truck has never left me stranded in the middle of nowhere.

I was going to get video of the fan, but it's so unnoticeable right now that the camera can't pick it up. Before I replace it though, I'll get video of it before I start.

Crap, so I'm pretty sure my front drivers side wheel bearing is going. I was hearing squeaks while driving and I thought it was the fan, but it wasn't. I don't know how long it will last, but I haven't really felt any bad vibrations yet. It's going to be a tight month, I need a beer.

Well, I replaced my fan clutch. Unfortunately, it only fixed my fan wobble slightly.

Anyways, here's some install pics from today.

First I drained the coolant like ToyoTech suggested.

Drained coolant from the drain plug, I only drained it until the fluid level went below the upper radiator hose. Disconnected the upper hose from radiator and left it there.

Took off the 2 clips holding the bottom half of the shroud

Then I took off the 4 10mm bolts holding the shroud to the radiator.

Unbolted the 4 10mm nuts holding the fan to the fan clutch. I was gonna thread-lock the studs, but when I saw the other side of the nut, I felt it was gonna be a little unnecessary if I did that. I had removed the fan and fan clutch once before and installed it without thread-locker and it had been fine ever since.

Next, I took 2 12mm wrenches to unbolt the fan clutch from the fan bracket.
One wrench to hold one nut, the other to loosen it. When you get to the last nut you can tighten another one to get it off. Once you break the nuts loose they loosen easier.

Here's a video of the fan still wobbling, I don't get it, none of the pulleys wobble at all. Not even a little bit, which is why I thought the problem wasn't the fan bracket. There were no visual cracks on the fan tabs that go to the fan clutch either. I'm stumped, I'm thinking about just ignoring it. I can't afford anymore repairs right now. Anyone else have similar fan symptoms?

Now about the squeak issue that I think are my wheel bearings. Many people have posted that they hear a growling sound when that happens. Mine sounds like metal to metal, or like when brake pad indicator makes noise. It's intermittent though, and what's worse is I'm not even sure where it's coming from. Could be my rear brakes being low, but I don't know. Any thoughts? Warped Rotors?
