I would just replace the tcase seal, and the seals in the front of the transmission and take a chance. With 185k miles, it most likely is good. If it is bad then pulling it again would be a downer. The tranny I got was a little noisey at first, but after 50 miles is nice and quite now. Probably just needed to get fluid and lubed up from driving it. If it is bad then I would go about having it rebuilt for that price, which sounds great to me.

Maybe things will settle down for you soon. Wishing you the best.

Chef,
I'm not gonna lie.....I skimmed the diatribe above.
The trans...
I had an 87 4Runner with 110K original miles. Had to hold it in first when you let out the clutch, and 5th started to develop a whirl shortly after i owned it.
If it were my trans, I'd rebuild it, rather then swap something in that could develop a problem. You will still need your original trans rebuilt...so pay now at your convenience or pay later after you have already put the trans in. Doesn't take much to remove one of our transmissions and install a new one, unfortunately there is no way to test the trans out of the truck.
My 2 cents... rebuild the trans you just bought, and install...then..pull the old one, rebuild the transfer, and get it ready to be a doubler...sell off other bits.
You can rebuild a trans yourself, but only if you have the room to lay all the bits out in an 'exploded view'...unless you are a pro trans guy... that is just my suggestion. I'd rebuild it myself, but there could be a learning curve, and do you want to 'Learn' on your trans with the possibility of having to open it up after completion and install if you notice something wrong?...just sayin.

The reason I say don't rebuild it yet till you know is you know your original trans needs it. I rather put money in the original trans if after installing the yard trans ends up being crap. Otherwise you might luck out and be rocking a working trans the entire time. Your not out of any money other than just time to swap it. Def look into dual case lol

^^^DOH!!!...see I just skimmed it...I agree with you. It takes little effort to drop another trans in...throw in the newish one, and rebuild your known bad one. I'd throw in the new one sans front drive shaft....run it down the road threw all gears...if its worse then the other change it our again.

Also, on the new-to-u trans, look for bolts that have been turned(wrench marks), the drain and fill plugs don't count. You could actually have a rebuilt trans already...but maybe not....I'd check.

Maybe have my machinist check all the gears and bearings.....

Lil more noise in 1st, then les and less as I went through to 5th... but remember, only residual fluid in it. I have the full fsm for 88.... So I will take a look in the fsm and sure, maybe just a mild service and check then refill and go! Lol. .. maybe go dual cases all up in heah? hahahaha
I'm sure it's a low percentage of people that drive in, but there is got to be someone that works there that got some kind of story on this rig form PO.

Maybe he just didn't want to mess with it or wasn't mechanically inclined.
Embarrassing to say my younger brother had a 1972 Ford Mach I and had it towed off to the yard,
My older brother and I disowned him, that was 20 years ago. lol

Maybe a refresh as you suggested, those things are pretty bullet proof.

Steve McQueen would have been really pissed.

As for my little brother, it was a day of "infamy" when he did that.

Hey guys, I've just been really slammed with life. Much of it is dealing with things for Mom, trying to put her paperwork and such in order. She seems to be doing a lot better, I can't thank you guys enough for all the thoughts and prayers!

Well, today when I have some time in the later afternoon I finally got back on the Trans and I finished cleaning it up pretty pristine! .......

I have a trans output shaft seal where the transfer case meets the trans, and I have the gasket that mates the two as well, and I also have a front and rear transfer case pinion seal kit with the dust shield for the front one... All Toyota/OEM. I might take a peek and also swap over my bearing retainer seal from my trans which is almost new(I did that when I removed the first motor that Valeo's screwed up so badly. Some of you might remember, I had a week and I was positive the rear main wasn't leaking... Figured out it was the trans input shaft/bearing retainer seal).

From here i have to decide how far I want to go and if I want to take a really good look in there or not. ( I even looked him into the Marlin trans rebuild kit, but it is currently not in stock and doesn't appear to have a date as to when it will be. I figure if I'm going to rebuild it with the help of my machinist it might be a good idea to use the best parts available? I think factory TOYOTA parts, like all new syncros and bearings and seals, ... Well that might get a little costly??? Lol). I think I will call my buddy at the dealer anyway and see if they do have a rebuild kit and how much it would be, minus the parts I already have???

I already removed the bell housing and will remove the retainer tomorrow. Inside of this bell housing was unbelievable! I mean I could literally build a grease snowman out of all the crap I got out of there so far, and its not even done. Hahaha. I'll get it though, I just prefer working on things that are clean, not to mention; I really don't want to open up a trans in an eighth inch of hardened grease and sludge. Lol.

I also noticed that there is is this a number on there. It looks hand written and like perfect writing that was originally on the Trans before all the grease buildup... If I didn't know any better I would swear it says 88, each number being about the size of an orange in total. Just kind of odd, and I wonder if the trans was ever rebuilt or not. It sure does go easily into every gear and the shaft spins smoothly in all gears and in 4hi and 4lo. Anyway, we'll see, right? Thanks for checking in guys, I'm sorry I've been a bit aloof as of late... I honestly can't help it, but I do very much enjoy updating. I'll be back! He he he

Grease snowman....

Good morning Chef. The irises are blooming beautifully and make me think of you and my mom when I see them. You because of your pics and my mom because they were once hers.

PS. Can you please come over and clean my whole truck up like you've got that tranny looking? Please?

Kornhuskerwizard; THANX! It's been a lot of work, surprisingly, but not so much considering all the nooks and crannies on this thing! Hahahahaha... I mean, this thing is the proverbial Thomas's English muffin! Lol... I just threw that in there to see how many of us are willing to date ourselves enough to reveal that we know that slogan well? Haha. I actually decided but I didn't want to take the chance with the trans in the hot tank, and to be honest I think my machinist would have wanted me to disassemble it first... In that case it probably would have been fine to just disassemble it and allow some debris to get in there... But I figured if I clean it really well, open it up and take a good look, and find all the syncros are without compromise... Then I might just run her like she is with new seals? As I said before we'll see as I go. .... Only problem is that when you get that far it really is probably advisable to slap new bearings on it at least.

HABERNATOR! .... Thank you so much for stopping in, girlfriend!... Okay, maybe I'm dating myself again here I need to put a disclaimer that I am NOT, while I do think you are one beautiful mama, speaking as though you are literally my girlfriend! Hahahahaha... Just kidding, obviously most people know what I meant. . Anyway, you laugh, and yet you should know me well enough to know that I literally was going to try and build a little grease snowman! I was not kidding in regards to the amount kama it was quite literally a ball around the size of a racquetball!..... and I haven't even finished cleaning the inside of the bell housing. When this sucker goes in its going to be pristine with a painted wannabe Marlin gold band and everything! Hahahaha. I thought about painting the transmission for cleaning, but when done properly it really shouldn't have any issues like that and shouldn't come out for another, oh I don't know, quarter million miles? The funny thing is I know people with 400,000 miles that never had their transmission rebuilt... Or at least that's what they say. While I would never suggest that it's impossible, I have my doubts as I've been told that the syncros are softer and are not meant to last forever. Even with proper maintenance and never running dry, I would imagine simple wear and tear would eventually take them out? I think in some instances these things are on the third owner and the second owner didn't disclose that he had a new transmission or rebuilt one... I I know, what difference does it make? None really, hahaha.

Paul, thank you so much for sharing that! I think that botany is one of my favorite things to enjoy on this journey! I do have a lot of rough times maintaining so much fruit and herbs and otherwise, but it's so rewarding and it never causes me the drama that the mechanical realm often does. Lol. Those are awesome shots and that's an awesome pup! I have some more pictures to share of the yard but I just uploaded yesterday. I will post them up here today at some point if I can,.....

......... But, I might not have an opportunity as it is a very special day... 80 years ago today, may 10th, 1933, my mother was born! And thank goodness she was right? Hahahahaha... No, but seriously, she is just an awesome human being with such an incredible story and so many accomplishments... And such incredible persistence and fortitude to fight through some of the infirmity related trials that she's faced and come out the other side, every single time, never losing herself list, patient, loving, putting everyone else first, never complaining through so many trials_ type A personality... She's just a rare human being, and I swear its not solely and Prejudice that I say,... Those who have known or will know her are better for having had her in their lives!

I really appreciate any input, as I really don't have a lot of time to research at this moment.... So if anyone has on hand any transmission input, specifically the W 56 related stuff, I'll be very grateful! What I was thinking of doing I was having those transmission guys I know take a look, and for the price they charge, I think it would be worth it,... And then have them just slap in the Marlin kit for me.... And yet, I guess seeing that that kit is not available at the moment... Well, that might just put a damper on that plan, ehhhhhh? Hehe

Thanks a lot, guys! I will let her know you wish her a happy birthday!

Today I finished cleaning the bell housing and last details of the trans before I pulled the transfer case from the bell housing.....

Next make sure you have a good grip and that you don't knock the trans while standing up off of your blocks... Then pull up and out!

Not exactly sure what is going on with the truck but the flowers are nice. Have you thought about putting Marlin 4.7 gears into the transfer? I just got mine for about $600.00 for the chro-molly set. Cheap performance. The tranny looks good, but I still have not figured out what your are up to with it.

oh, nevermind my question, this makes sense, but I still think that you should get the Marlin 4.7 gears before they are out of stock again.
