Diff Breathers...........

Just had a lil time today, as the Mom called and needed a ride to the doctor(this always involves several hours.... Including this time, hahaha)... BUT, when I got home, I cleaned up the garage a bit and then did my front diff breather extension.......

I then used a 2 piece Toyota Engine Vacuum piece that I got from, I believe, an older Corolla or Camry..... And, I inserted the Breather in that, then installed it, as I said in the video, in the firewall hole........ Worked out well. It's tight there, and I used the screw from the clamp and ran it through the hole in the firewall lip, then put a nut, lock and flat washer on it on the underside. I hope someone else can use this.... I think it's PLENTY high and opposite the exhaust, etc. Can't hurt, right?>>>>>>>>>>>

DIFF BREATHER MOD:

I'm going to add an elbow to the front diff breather hole in the front diff(while his is straight axle and has more clearance, mine being IFS diff and no body lift, its just too close to the oil pan)..as per 4crawlers recommendation, using 1/8 NPT fittings from TRUE VALUE HARDWARE STORE... I will also add a filter, ALTHOUGH I dont see much mentioned as to which type he used, etc...

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...html#Breathers

Richard, u might wanna do this b4 that trip to Salton Sea, never know if it might rain hard just b4, etc. Can u imagine how muddy the Crest OHV area back there is now? It was for us and that was b4 hardly any rain.

Thanx buddy, I appreciate it. ...

I hope it helps someone, and I just realized on 4crawler that 1/8 NPT fittings will fit the diff breather threads (THANKS, YET AGAIN, ROGER ). So while at PepBoys, I picked up a couple elbows at 45* angles so I can clear the oil pan without kinking hose at all and to keep away from 90* which would risk pooling of chilled fluid in the line under heavy conditions/pressure, where fluid could flow up into the fuel line. I will put up pix of the changes when I get home.

I should be done with the breather thing shortly and then move onto the brakes... opened the box and they look nice...

Nice job on the breather mod mark. Ive been wanting to do it myself but didnt know if i could get a fitting locally. I agree on the 90 fitting coming out of the diff to keep it away from the oil pan.

Hey, u must be a Nebraskan! My uncle, God Rest his soul, was an incredible bball player at U of N! Woot! Lol

Actually, I meant i will likely go with the 45* angled one, bcuz the 90* could pool, if the hose, over time, drip-loops or something. I will try both, the 90* would be for sure the more clearing method abd would likely be fine since I have the top portion fixed to the firewall ...........

4crawlers write up is great. .....

oooh pretty rotors lol sexy!

as for the fittings cornhusker a 1/8th NPT or national pipe thread a common thread type to a 45 degree adapter or 1/8thNPT to 1/8thNPTIT (internal thread) fitting with a small straight would get it done an keep the pooling to a minimum
nearly any plumbing store air fittings supply

heck mark you could do chromed soft copper hard line via a NPT to flare nut compression fitting via the water lines to toylet tank parts no leaks no rubber line to rot or melt

NOOOOOOOOOOO WORKY!

HEADS UP! ...... 1/8 NPT fittings do not work in at least my diff. I must of misread 4crawlers page, cuz the toyoya breather fits right into the 1/8 NPT fitting, but the 1/8 NPT fitting does not fit in the diff. Its just too wide at the first thread to get into diff threads themselves. I will edit the above posts, and maybe others could edit theirs? Sorry, and trust me, not too happy I lost over an hour of spare time that I could barely spare! Lol.

I will reread 4crawlers write up and get back.

Well, all I got was 1/8 on both ends.... and the standard toyota diff thread and the vacuum fitting threads all fit in the diff AND the 1/8 NPT female porrion.... and dont get tigh t er as they go, but do fit, yet not the other way around. The diameter of the threaded portion is just too wide.

Check that link, 4crawler... see where I went wrong? I havent had time to reread it just yet. Sorry

4Runner "Rattling Tailgate Keepers" Cure....

Nothing dramatic, haha... BUT, as I said in the video, below... "If you're like me, those keeper arms rattling around incessantly in the tailgate, while wheeling, around town, ANYWHERE, it drives you nuts as well!" lol....

SO, it's just a fix that someone told me about, couple years ago... and I FINALLY was reminded of it while in the Salvation Army, when I happened upon a 24" Bicycle Tire Tube.........

I installed the rear diff breather extension, tonight, using the Toyota Vacuum Elbow right into the tailgate, then ran it up and over the spare tire, Frame, and up into the Cargo Panel through the Grommet you will see in the pictures, below.

Stock Rear Breather Location(Driver Side of the Pumpkin, on top)......

Ran the Hose off the vacuum elbow in the diff to the grommet on the passenger side taillight, up into the Cargo Access Panel door Area.....

Using a "1/8' NPT" Threaded "T" fitting, with one of T portions plugged using a 1/8 NPT plug, I then put the Breather into the top of the T, then on the bottom, I put a 1/8 NPT thread with 3/8" Tube with Nipple on top, and ran the 3/8" Nipple portion through a hole in the rear of that access panel/around the taillight(it's a pinch/support type piece of metal, and it already has a hole that fit the 3/8" Tube Nipple JUST through.... Then I ran the 3/8" Fuel Hose up on the Nipple, TIGHT up against the metal lip with the hole in it, ...then clamped it down.... DONE! >>>>

Okkkk,..... Here we are with the 4crawler info.....

"However, the threaded hole in the Toyota axle is nothing more than 1/8" NPT:

NOTE:
Officially I would think the thread is either M10-1.0 or 1/8" BSP but its close enough for gov't work
NPT = National Pipe thread Tapered, and it is 0.407" (10.2mm) OD with 27 TPI (threads per inch)
M10-1.0 is 10mm OD and 1.0 mm thread pitch (or 25.4 TPI)
BSP = British Standard Pipe thread, and it is 0.407" (10.2mm) OD with 28 TPI (threads per inch)
So you can see the three are VERY close and for the few threads in the housing and the fact that pipe threads are tapered (meaning the male thread starts out small and gets larger in diameter as it threads in, female thread is the opposite) an 1/8NPT thread fits fine for this low pressure, low stress application, YMMV.
For an even better fit, run a 1/8" pipe thread tap down into the housing, apply grease to the tap to hold the few metal shavings it'll cut.
Breather Fitting Right Angle breather fitting
Straight 1/8NPT to 1/4 barb
fitting A 90 degree 1/8NPT Street Elbow
installed in the front diff.

A trip to the local hardware store revealed a whole wall full of every conceivable type and style of fitting for 1/8" pipe thread. They have NPT to hose barb fittings, NPT to NPT nipples, elbows of all sorts and they all cost around $1. For the rear axle, a simple NPT to hose barb fitting, sized for the ID of the hose you intend to use is ideal. Up front, I found the use of a close nipple and a 45 degree elbow and a hose barb makes a good combination."

Not sure I missed anything. ... All I know is the 1/8" NPT female took the stock toyota tapered thread just fine, but the pumpkin itself would not take thw male NPT threaded portion. Hmmmmmmm
