Oh spiffy plate, Kind of bummed they changed the laws again in colorado. Granted I wasn't orignally thrilled with the idea of 80s cars with collectors plates either when it happened There for a while it just had to be 20 years or older.
Motor vehicles that are model year 1975 or earlier or motor vehicles with a model year 1976 or later that were registered as a collector's item prior to September 1, 2009

So a guy on craigslist is parting out a 1990 4Runner. I'm going to go over some time during the weekend and look at and maybe buy the entire rear axle, just for the diff and maybe swap the drums over if they're good. Mine are looking pitiful. $150 for the entire rear or $90 for just the diff. I'd be stupid not to get the whole thing, right? The only issue is that he doesn't know what ratio it is. I know they're definitely not 4.88s because it's a 5 speed and I thought only automatics came with the 4.88s. Either way, I could swap my ring and pinion into the housing if they don't match. Or if they're 4.56s, I'll get the front diff to match to get ready for 33" tires.
The ad says it has 32" BFG A/T tires. I'm hoping they're on 15x8 rims with the right backspacing. If so, I'll snatch those up, too...and maybe a set of Aisin hubs if it has those too, for spares or to fix up and sell...and a steering wheel column cover...maybe the front valance I'm getting a little too giddy. It's always a bad idea to let me near a junk car with a wad of cash

My brother just bought a whole front straight axle that the guy said was good and after taking the third member out there was teeth missing off the pinion gear. Be careful , dont get hosed like he did. drain some fluid out when you look at it and check for filings or burnt smell.
As for the gear ratio, theres a link on my build thread from kelvinb through 4crawler i beleive with lots a good info on identification.

I was looking around for about 6 months for mine. Turns out it was right in front of me the whole time. I got lucky. You'll find one, it just takes time and patience to find the right one.

Thanks! I also got another steering wheel column cover for $10. My dang long legs broke the one I have off the mounts.
EDIT: He texted me before I left work saying that the front was bad, but when we got there he pointed out that there was some silicone around the front of the diff and he didn't feel comfortable selling it to me if it was bad. I told that I'll open it up and if it's bad, I can just take the ring and pinion out of it and swap it into my front. So he sold it to me for only $40 instead of the original $75. So with the steering column cover and front and rear diffs, I paid a grand total of only $200. If the entire front diff is bad, then I'm only out $40, which isn't bad.

My local salvage yard gave me a cheat sheet for etermining gears if this will help. See you said they were 4.56 but just to double check. He told me it was really accurate and from a few I have checked I would agree.
