it's what we were told.....and by all the 3.0 stuff i saw out there about head gasket issues i was certain he was accurate.

only condensation we see from the tailpipe is the stuff that is supposed to be there. the only "steam" from the tailpipe is on 1st start if at all......and that usually is dependent on the weather too.....in other words, i believe it to be appropriate.

i'm basically trying to confirm what i was hoping....that the head gaskets are either good or have been replaced already and are still good.

i want it to only be that we have to do the valve cover gaskets........but i m not going to bet the ranch on that until i repeat the passenger's side.

Gotcha

Well, at initial start up, cold, that's normal, like you said, depending on the weather. And if you have no milk shake or steam under normal running or any of the other obvious signs....seems like it's running pretty darn TOIGHT! lol.

Great work Joe! You might have got a steal on this 4Runner if that HG is in good shape...

No pics of the compression test 92 TOY? Just kidding, sounds like you're REALLY loving the 3.slow!!!

no,don't have any pics of the test......or of me searching for the extension that dropped inside the engine.....or audio of the ensuing verbal tirade i went on secondary to trying to find it.

i do NOT look forward to taking off that intake plenum.....i can remember several of the "everybody breaks the __________ when they take it off" but i don't remember what they were talking about.

we do, however, have an extra plenum with lots of stuff attached to it that i scored for $13 or so (basically cost more to ship it than what i won it for)

so, certainly i don't want to do a bigger job than i have to (talking about just doing the valve cover gaskets versus all the way down to head gaskets)....so for now i will be aiming at only doing the valve covers.

some interesting info i found last night and today.

when doing an "apples to apples" comparison for spark plugs (broke 1, so i'm going to replace them all) i found the following info.

NGK ........of the 4 spark plugs listed on the NGK site as fitting the 4runner, i decided on their top-of-the-line IRIDIUM #5688

so here's what i found

NGK IRIDIUM #5688

Advance Auto $4.99 each
Auto Zone $10.99 "
Pep-Boys $6.99
Spark Plugs dotcom $7.83
NAPA $9.09

so, based on those prices and knowing there a 2 Advance Auto's within 25 miles (1 EAST and 1 WEST of me each about 25 miles or so....gotta love living in the woods)....i decided i could pick them up when i do running around today.......NOT! of course, not in stock in any of their stores, but to ship to my house still comes up cheaper than the cheapest other price ...without shipping figured in.

going to probably check with Ted from ENGNBLDR to see what he has as far as valve cover gaskets and intake plenum gasket.......gonna also check w/ TOYOTA

ROCKAUTO dotcom seemed to have really good prices on gaskets etc etc etc.....did not check shipping prices.

thought i'd let you all know that stuff

Best wishes, GO GET EM, JERRY!

PS> I've had more than less tell me "ONLY OEM PLUGS!".... yeah, they were yelling and foaming at mouth, just like you pictured there, hahahaha. Jk,, but you know what I mean. Anyhow, I only mention it because I've heard things like "The Iradium plugs burn to hot" or "yadda yadda yadda", .... Not trying to throw a wrench in the engine, just keeping you thinking, lol. I think I found a site with plenty of technical applications tests done on many plugs, .... and Nippondenso Plugs won the show for the certain trucks they came OEM in, ...but not sure about yours, so you'll have to double check .....if you even feel like it, hahaha.

Best of luck, Brudda,

Mark

What's the countdown on his 'first driving date'? 11 Months? I would guess when you mentioned that that you meant till he gets his permit, ...is that wrong? Sorry, just remembering how EXCITED I WAS! lol

I BET, Joe! Hey, don't just think it'll be Groceries... It'll be 'cleaners, Home Depot, Pet Store, Office Depot, etc., etc., etc.,", hahaha. But that's ok, it's part of the 'Paying the dues, forward'! lol.

That thing'll be SUWEEEEEEEET by the time you're ready to drive off into the sunset, Joe!

Congratz on the seemingly tight rig!

My pleasure, Joe! Heck, I'm excited for you, ....I'd bet more than half these guys are! It's one thing to finally get your license for the first time.... It's quite another to get it and then JUMP INTO YOUR CHERRY FIRST GEN 4RUNNER! lol.

Have fun building it, until then, young man!

well....2 1/2hrs of sleep......but anyway....stupid tooth!

Joe asked if he could start to label hoses etc....., so that what he was doing and then that turned to this and that and we ended up doing alot more than i had planned.

EGR is off. what a total PITA!
hoses are labeled, pictures are taken and hoses are removed.
almost ready to loosen up the plenum.

advantage is that we have that extra plenum with all it's parts still attached...will cannibalize it as we need and either just keep it or part it out.......not a bad score for about $15.

on with the pics...

again....most of these pics will serve as reference for us for re-assembly

and this is the spare plenum.....
