hiya.

well, just picked up the Cadillac, had been at the garage getting the rear brake lines replaced.......$60.95 ($7.50 parts, $50 labor and plus tax)......about 1/3rd of what I thought it was gonna cost. so that's 1 in the good column.

off today and tomorrow.....hopefully.....long story but the same song-and-dance at work where I could work 24 / 7 and it wouldn't fill all the holes. had an impromptu 7 extra hours yesterday, supposed to leave at 3, stayed until 10 and that was all I had in me.....so I left. probably could have stayed until 7am and it would have helped very little......kinda getting apathetic about the whole work thing......RANT OVER.

today promises to be a warm on again, it's 79 degrees right now.

I will post a pic of the alternator connection where there is a small threaded part coming off of it and the nut itself is rusted and partially gone (i shudder to think of what caused that).......I think before I yank the alternator for testing or replacing, I will clean up that connection.

I still am fairly confident I could get electrocuted by that rusty setup, but is there a chance the alternator things I could get electrocuted BETTER if I clean that up??

the can of PB Blaster says something about using it on electrical connections......hmmmm

dang Jerry, I might have been able to do those brake lines for ya. I did the ones on the rear of my truck and almost the whole system on my bronco. Anyway, as long as you disconnect the battery, messing with the alt won't hurt ya.

for the money, it was worth having him do it and not have to worry about me messing it up.
i know about disconnecting the battery.......i meant, i'm sure even though it's rusty and stuff, i'm sure it's enough to die, but hopefully not enough to run properly.....in other words, I'm hoping if i clean that up, it will be better.

You will want to disconnect the battery. I even do it now when working around the Power Steering pump. I got into the alternator by accident as they are so close. I got zapped.

But with it disconnected you will be safe. Hope it get goes well for ya on your project today.

well....ended up at work "mandated" for 4 hours yesterday.

Jerry take the alt off, spray the heck out of it with this stuff then use your air gun to dry it off. Make sure you get the 19 oz Lectra-Motive stuff, not the 11 oz QD electronic Cleaner. Cans look very similar.

Yes, spray the alt with the Lectric clean I had a brand new alternator going bad due to a massive oil leak from the front main. Oil will kill an alt, after I sprayed it and fixed the front main, it ran like new.
Then clean any rusty terminals and smear dielectric grease all over it. For the main alt terminal power get a boot, marine grade if you can and use larger gauge wire. Again smearing dialectic grease before you slide the boot over. I drill a small hole in the end of the boot to let any moisture out.

took it for another ride today....probably about 6 miles today...with the 2 boys and showing it off to the brother-in-law.....ran awesome!!


Also....got another mark on my man-card....brother-in-law has a 2004 Tacoma....engine light is on....hearing a rattle from underneath as well. said the light was for the O2 sensor. checking for the rattle, turned out it was a small heat shield or debris shield for the O2 sensor very loose.....why???? because there were no nuts holding the sensor in, I was able to pull it right out. cleaned up the threads, made a gasket out of some leftover metallic gasket I had laying around and re-used some EGR nuts and he was back on the road.

I told him his ECU probably had to re-learn the exhaust because it was probably telling the motor to run richer and his light will go out after a few miles, or if not he should disconnect the negative cable for a few minutes. this sensor is AFTER the cat. I also told him that we would order him new nuts for it.

It might go out on it's own, better to just disconnect the battery and pull the ecu fuse. Or he might get lucky and Autozone erases it for him. Our Autozone here though will only read them, they won't erase it any longer.

It felt good to do.

got to drool all over his 3.4 too. VERY similar outwardly to the 3vze front end. he's got a slight squeal from the fan pulley area...was using a real stethoscope rather than a mechanic one (not a good idea) and I was hearing it there. not sure if it was the pulley itself or resonating from the water pump. his has the same fan base set-up as Joe's, so i'm kinda doubting it's the water pump.

Alot of people dont know how to work on cars these days and I am sure your brother in law felt he had an expensive car bill coming up. Bet he felt a big relief on your fix for him. Great job.

No need to take apart the alt, just take it off the truck, spray the heck out of it, use the entire can if you have to, and then blow dry it with your compressor.

alright....I'm going to take that nut off and see if i can get a new one. not that the nut is the problem, BUT....it doesn't look healthy.

I'll keep myself busy doing something else tomorrow.......saw lots of JB-Weld-ish products at the store, was wondering if I should attempt in on those exhaust connections. some were for exhaust, some for general and then there was the JB stuff.....may buy it and try it on one and not the others, in case it ends up needing to be welded.
