a pic of the springs and the reason why the one i have will not work. the springs are just about flush in the head so there is nowhere to grab onto the sides of the springs.

You might be able to get by using an 02 sensor socket and a bit C-clamp.

Lumpy I was just thinking the same thing. I have an o2 sensor socket and a fairly large c-clamp, but not sure if the socket will work since it's a little different then Lumpy posted. Not sure if the c-clamp is big enough or not as well.

If you have a Toyota jack or a bottle jack you can rig up a press and use that and the socket to compress the springs. Might be a lot of work for a $40.00 tool though.

if i had a welder I could see tacking that thing to a c-clamp....i should call around and see if auto zone or advance auto (not sure) have those (the real deal) for a tool loan.

i would really like to get these heads back on this weekend....that's my goal. if we get that done, then I could (we) could do the timing belt and the get the clutch set up and get this motor back in.

just ordered from Advance Auto......

the tool thing / 6 NGK spark plugs / Denso wires....came to $83.23 delivered.......considering the cheapest I could find that tool was $51 ($43 plus shipping), i used some promo codes an got it for $39 was $54.99 minus $15.20.....plugs were $3.09 x 6 minus $5.13 savings and the wires were $34.99 minus $9.67.

sooooooo......3 to 4 days shipping....we will see when the stuff gets here......not gonna act like i'm in a hurry now, just didn't want to lose momentum. there is plenty to do anyway....just not fun stuff.

spent the last 2 hours or so making a mess again.

1st off, the power washer decided it didn't like the tip that was on it anymore (actually i dropped it pretty hard and i think i broke it) so i put on the other tip i had never used....apparently it's made for cutting concrete buildings in half or etching diamonds....almost didn't even need degreaser....so anyhoo, cleaned and painted the dipstick tube, driver's side valve cover, alternator / distributor bracket and rear-most passenger's side cam cover thingy.

also, scrubbed the engine bay by hand using simple green foaming bar-b-q grill cleaner and a scotch-brite pad and rinsed with hot water. a note of just how sharp the bell housing edge is will be retained as it turned into a bit of a blood bath / engine compartment degreasing adventure. then as dessert, i brought the pressure washer in and gave it hell in there again. i think we are at the "clean enough to eat off of" stage and ready for paint once it all dries.

in retrospect, taking a shower this morning was a waste.

Right on, Jerry! Can you possibly get some video of doing one of the valves? Most don't take the gutsy route you're taking with a DIY go through..... but maybe more would if they saw you KILL'N IT! lol. Actually a very good price on everything, man!

thanks Chef...ya know LUMPY had posted some of those videos in my old original thread and basically it's just a repetition thing once you get the valve loose from the spring.

i'll see if i can find them....they were from youtube
