yep...it's much cleaner now but not perfect. but certainly it will be much easier now to spot clean here and there rather than the whole thing being cruddy.
garage floor is BAD! really screwed that up bad. I am sooooooooo p-o'd about that. the floor was far from spotless but oily crumbs are everywhere, cannot be swept up because they just skid and I guess it's just going to be another project later down the road when we are done and the 4runner is out of the way.
anyhooo.........expecting some "company" saturday......the LUMPY!!!!....making a trek this way for some family matters and will likely complete the journey to my house. if the timing is right, Brandon should be finished playing in the mud by then and we could have a little impromptu meeting of the mindless here at my house.
pizza and juice box party!!!

I'm not Adam Sandler or Gumby. At best I can set the cam up on the dash, that's it. I'm not setting up a lone tripod for someone to swipe my cam to get a vid like last year.

Engine bay is looking better. It will make it easier later on when working in there. Sorry about it getting on the floor.
That last pic of the Runner looked good. I always liked a black Runner. Glad to see you get a better schedule.

alrighty.
had church service in the garage this morning...so no cussing.
Joe and I too the heads off. not a terrible job. only place that was suspect or questionable as far as perhaps a gasket failure was the very front cylinder on the passengers side. otherwise, did not see any odd areas, i will let you guys check out the pics and tell me.
I will say, pulled quite a it of RTV from some of the coolant passages.......perhaps a previous water pump job was a bit over-zealous with the RTV.
on with the pics:
this pic is the rear-most area of the passengers side head at the rear cam-cap / bearing.....looks like this may have been the main oil leak area
and a better pic of the camshaft etc ready to be removed
passenger's side head removed
these 2 pics are the "suspect" area....just about at the very front of the front-most cylinder on the passenger's side
and a pic of the driver's side head before we started on it
and the driver's side cam
and a reference pic for the bracket for the distributor
driver's side head off
driver's side head
passenger's side head
and staged for cleaning....passenger's on left, driver's on right
OK...break time...hungry

Hello guys.. I dont really see anything to be worried about. That one picture of the cylinder still has crosshatch marks in it. Did the PO say this motor was rebuilt before you got it?
Might work on getting the water jackets cleaned out.
Doesnt look like it has a bunch of sludge built up in the camshaft area. I have seen alot worse.
I think I remember you taking compression checks, but cant recall your compression numbers. I would be tempted to have the heads checked, clean it up, and put it back together.
Looking good.

if i recall, that cylinder was iffy with pressure.......but all-in-all, I am happy as a clam to not find horrible stuff when we took those heads off.
the jury is still out on this steamer. it does what it's supposed to do, just not sure this is the place to use it. it's stream is very narrow and makes for some tedious work. likewise we set a fan up to blow away the steam so you could see what you are doing. still the pressure washer is best.....especially initially to remove a thick layer of sludge.
but, of course....pics
this is the distributor-goes-through-here thingy
before
after:
driver's side head BEFORE:
and after (and this is the very 1st cleaning without cleaner, just pressure washing)
and this is with some purple power, some steaming and some orange goop and pressure washing
time for another break

I saw that....actually saw that more than a year ago...probably was a different thread. we got TOYOTA gaskets, so no worries.

ok good. I am gonna have to read up on that valve adjustment too if ya want me to do it for ya. I know doing the timing is identical to that of the 22re so no issues there.
