thanks Terry....some unavoidable delays occurred. vacation was great.....but, threw us for a loop in that the kids are STILL making up homework and we got back Tuesday! so until such time as we are all up to speed on all the necessary stuff, we won't be doing any truck stuff. also, some changes are coming for me at work, i believe, and i'm not quite sure what's gonna happen....not losing my job, but someone probably is and i will probably assume their duties and it's gonna be tough. so alot of smoke needs to clear for us right now. stay tuned. we'll get there.

so in regards to doing the ZUK mod on Joe's 4runner and on my truck, I went out and took some measurements.
Joe's definitely sags, and mine, I think, is a illusion if not just a bit of sag.
Joe:
bumpstop gap 1 3/4''
wheel lip to fender 10 1/4''
ME:
bumpstop gap 3''
wheel lip to fender 12 1/2''
so Joe's definitely NEEDS the spring mod and the benefits thereof
Mine......meh....could use it for the benefit of figuring out how to do it on mine and then doing it quicker and better on his and also will increase my ability to load up the truck without sagging.

Not sure on the 92 but the gap between the bump and stop on the 88 should be 3 1/2" IIRC. But don't quote me on that. As I think the bump stop itself and the upper stop both measure 3.5" as well. So that might be were I am thinking that 3.5" is coming from.
But...... If you look in the FSM it should give you a ride height spec for the given frame code and you can use that as well. It's a measurement from the ground to the spring hanger bolt. You know that infamous one on mine? Problem I had with the FSM one though is I don't recall anything in there for the 31" tire option.

good morning, ladies and gentlemen.....and Brandon (hehehehe)
I announced to the wifeypoo yesterday (and I am sooooo brave from a distance when I am on the phone with her when I am at work and she is at work)....tat today is the day Joe and I will spend alot of time on his motor. I did all (or most) of my "chores" this week and that included straightening out the garage after another hard winter and months of just kinda tossing stuff in the garage.
so today, without further adieu, we will be putting the motor on the hoist and working on the back and bottom of it. mainly whatever needs FIPG....since that stuff is like gold just like the Toyota coolant, I don't want to waste any of it.
the plan is to detach the motor from it's stand and get the rear plate off and replace the rear main oil seal, clean stuff up and put the rear plate back on......put the oil baffle plate back on (or whatever is really called) and pack the oil pump gears and attach the oil pump for good and the finally the oil pan for good.
after that it's gonna be , put the motor back on the stand and start working on the heads.
soooooooooooo......here we go.....Joe is up bright and early just like I am......grass is too wet to cut.......and his allergies are waaaaaay too much for him to do that anyways.

Go Joe Go !!! Can't wait to see those valve covers Green.
Oh yeah you gonna attempt to paint the block while it's out? And/or replace those freeze plugs?

how to loosen the oil pump backing plate
ready to be installed
mocked up to make sure we knew what we we doing....baffle plate goes on 1st.....ask me how I know....
rear main cover back on....FIPG goes here
and after alot of FIPG squeezing (rear main cover, baffle plate, oil pump, oil pan) and Joe holding the baffle plate in place for about 30 minutes because it only gets sandwiched-in between the oil pan and the block but has FIPG on it......and then scrambling around because I did NOT have the oil pump bolts ready (dumb me!) and then had to turn the crank to get the crank in the right position to accept the pump, then it all went together.
and the proud owner posing with his baby's motor
break time. have to clean up the rear plate and then get the motor back on the stand

thanks......that's alot more of a PITA than advertised.
would have been not so much of a hassle if it weren't for that baffle plate and squeezing FIPG on that......and then making Joe hold it while I monkeyed around with the FIPG on the pump and turning the crank to get it on.
the rear main was really no issue at all......easy off, easy out....kinda tricky to get the new seal in and seated right....but it all went without incident.

some more progress....not really.
had to put that rear plate back on to put the motor back on the stand
so, of course....had to paint it
dirty.......
clean....and painted
and then just to see....we mocked this up before we called it a day. good progress indeed. guess up next will be to get the heads off.....eek.

Jerry, ....just curious why you're not cleaning up the back of the block a bit more? Not complaining, lol...it's your boys, rig ... Just curious....cuz you painted the plate that goes over some of it, lol.
GREAT progress, Jerry, Joe! Hope it comes together for summer!

most of what you see as far as a mess goes is the backs of the heads. the area behind that plate was cleaned.......superficially but heavy stuff was cleaned away. a bit nervous to get too aggressive on the back there.
but basically....it goes like this. that thing was such an oily mess, that unless i toothbrush it with orange goop and pressure wash it, it's never going to be oil free (the block, that is)...the rest of it will be perfectly oil free and edible.....or at least enough to eat off of.
unfortunately, for today, we are outta time.
promotion at work means NO MORE WEEKENDS, so 1 week from today is the last saturday I will work and never again will i be working weekends unless it's by choice....so very soon we will have more time for this stuff.
