needed to get the pressure washer connected for another purpose, but getting the pan off has been something we've been wanting to do. Joe is happy to finally be starting to work on it again. although, like i said, it snowed on us for about 10 minutes while i was scrubbing.

yeah the pan has some funky shapes to it....but it's in great shape.

when we took the pan down, he siphon still had oil in it.....nice golden oil too, nice and clean but there was some oil in the pan that was lumpy and like sludge, guess it was stuff that never made it out of the pan. ever.

ya know...it's killing me. i want to go out there and do this and that and the other thing, but Joe knows this is his build and he does the wrenching.

i was parts cleaner and painter yesterday. I only helped with 1 bolt for the oil pump.

it's certainly a better GREEN in person. just like my RED on my truck looking ORANGE on the computer, this is looking quite light and "minty" in the pictures.

so today's episode was to try to do 3 things.
1)get the "baffle" plate off (just above the oil pan and between it and the crank)
2)get the oil pump off
3)get the water pump off

we, or should i say, Joe, accomplished all three.I didn't turn a wrench. I did, however have to help getting the crank timing gear off. was on there and didn't want to budge. we used the pry-areas like in the FSM and PB Blaster and on and on and finally got it. That task took the most time.

so, pretty much dodged a bullet with work, so now i am STILL off today....almost wasn't.

anyway, the next logical step / project, is to do the rear-main seal. had been wondering if that was something we should do while the oil pan is off. the answer is YES. when the Haynes book says (and I quote page 2B-13) "if you want to take the chance......." regarding doing it with the pan and retainer in place. so, no , I don't want to "take a chance".

so, today, after Joe gets home from school, we will probably put the motor back on the hoist so we can separate it from the motor stand and do the rear main seal.

since I am only the helper on this build, I can do the clean-up work and scrape and acetone the front of the block to make a good sealing surface for both the water pump and the oil pump.

one area of concern with the oil pump is a small o-ring seal that either went flying somewhere(doubt it) or did not come free. I don't see it on the oil pump itself, but my old eyeballs think it may still be on the block. i'm going to have to confirm this but i believe there is supposed to be some sort of indent where it mates up on the block and I cant quite tell if it's there or not (my work light bulb broke....and let me say, the new fangled light bulbs are kinda a pain in the butt in those when it's cold and they certainly aren't intended to be knocked around.....so i have to see if i have a normal light bulb left in this house to exchange into it)

I will also clean up the baffle plate and the mounting area on the block for it and the pan.

definitely need to use more FIPG on this motor than my own motor because as far as i can tell, right now i need it for, the oil pump (no gasket, just FIPG), the retaining plate for the rear main, the baffle plate (which gets sandwiched in between the oil pan and the block and is ONLY held on by FIPG)and the oil pan. i will also need some down the road for the valve cover gaskets.

my choices (metal ones are here too because there is one metallic one with a BLUE coating on it....again, don't know why)
bottom right are the 2 most likely choices (rubber one on left, BLUE metal one on right)....my vote is for the rubber one



and then we have the LABELED front seal for the oil pump.......1 I had ordered on my own and actually have a 2nd one that came with the gasket kit (guess my OCD missed that one)

I am only guessing here, but my guess on the copper metal o-ring would be some sort of fuel line bango bolt. Then your 6 o-rings on the right side should be for maybe the intake plenum somewhere.

One of those gaskets in the top is probably gonna be for the oil pickup tube my guess there is the top left one.

Let's see if I am right. Can't really help out on this one.

Better label that photo as you go. Maybe arrange them exactly how you have them on the carpet onto cardboard and superglue them down so they don't move.

#5 Oil Pump to siphon (and it HAS to be, as it is the only one that fit correctly)

Ok....i did some work until Joe got home, then he took over.

as I've said before, make a list and expect to get about 1/2 of it done. so it was.

as far as what got done:
cleaned the baffle plate.....did NOT scrub it and pressure wash it as I was going to. I had left it outside last night and it got frosted and I notice a little rusty buildup on some spots....so I figure that if frost did that, pressure washing would do worse. so i wiped it all down, then used acetone on the gasket surfaces (in this case, both sides of the plate)

cleaned the font of the block with acetone and razor blade and blew it off with compressed air (what a GREAT toy).

painted the water pump........silver....go figure...it's actually the ALUMINUM colored engine paint. thermostat housing RED (as per Joe). bolts cleansed, degreased, scrubbed and painted.

nah. he said "too much green" when I suggested it.

LUMPY...I gotta tell ya, it's probably because I'm working on the motor out of the vehicle, but this has been pretty OK so far. of course, I've only done easy stuff so far.the water pump was the 1st new thing to be put on.

up next....the rear main seal.


still need to get that steamer to clean the engine bay.
