The 4runner is alive once more. Wiring is done and she runs. I have some small things to finish up and make pretty, but she runs good.
List
Adjust dashpot for tach, or find a 4cyl tach
Turn fuse box 90 degrees.
Find a tundra 2uz oil pan and lower ring. This will allow me to lower the engine down and remove the body lift.
Install rear 02 or resister. Only error code its throwing.
I also picked up an 85 straight axle. I plan on getting cleaned up and ready for a low profile SAS like toyospearo's greatwhiteshark build.

I also bought a press brake, tubing bender, Lincoln welder.
I have been busy building sliders, winch bumpers, and roof racks. I need to finish all these up for my runner now.

Nice work man she looks good. I get to take mine apart. Didn't want to so soon. But I slid into a power pole on the 11th as even though the news said it could snow and would be very cold CDOT thought it would be a good idea to just not de-ice the roads. Soi picked up a 90 pickup with a 22re. I miss the V8 so much. That 4 banger has no power. Nice work man with t solid axle you won't need the tundra pan I'm pretty sure.

I hope your ok? You gonna swap all this into the truck? New body on the runner? You gonna fix what you got or move on? Please say fix.
I have a couple of things to finish.
1. The power steering pump is noisy. Might rebuild or replace.
2. Adjust the tach.
3. It idles fine when cold but once warm it fishes for an idle. Plug the IAC and it idles fine. IAC might need cleaning. If that dosent do it then find a used one.
4. The wiring for the oil pressure switch was broke quite a ways back. Far enough back it wouldn't reach the switch. Need to fix the wire and hook up the pressure gauge to the cluster.
Sounds great, runs good so far. Keep the finger crossed.

Gonna fix the runner. Putting an automatic in her. One of zacks friends is trading me a transfer case for my bell housing an clutch. The pickup is gonne get a supercharged 3.4. Didn't do too much damage to the runner wasn't going very fast just 20 but black ice don't care bout that.

Good to hear your gonna fix it. Glad your ok. Why going auto? Just for wheeling or tired of shifting? Supercharged 3.4 is cool. Gotta race them against each other when your done! Any pictures of your rig after the incident?
What ya gonna do for wiring up the auto. Did you leave all the auto wiring in when your wired it up the first time or you gonna have to redo it again as well?

I'm not emissions compliant because the UZ dose not have secondary air injection. And because the check engine light is on it won't pas referee. I still have all the auto wiring in the harness still just tucked up on the fender. And I still have all the Lexus wiring in a box in the garage. Don't get me wrong the auto will be nice on the trail and in traffic. But the 5 speed is so nice behind the UZ. But u gotta do what u gotta do you know. Yeah I have some on my phone. I'll try an get some up but its a pain doing it on my phone. Don't have my computer right now.

Make sure you keep adding to your build thread. I want to see the second transformation of your runner.
I have had some people now refer to my rig as the Zrunner. Kind of catchy might have to run with that one.

This thing runs great. I had to pull my IAC valve and clean it. I need to put some resisters in my EGR system as I have a CEL code for my EGR. I removed the back pipe before the engine went into the 4runner. I will order lextreme's kit and remove the rest of the system.
I also need to put a resister in for the rear 02 sensor or install the rear 02. Those are the only codes I have. The 5 speed is awsome and this thing drives great. For anybody on the fence or in the middle of this swap. It is totally worth it. I am so happy that I did it and you will be too.

I also picked up an 85 front axle. So a SAS is in the works. I plan on rebuilding the axle and taking my time. I want to enjoy this engine for a while and let my pocket book recover a little bit before I start opening it again... LOL

Removed the 2" body lift and cut the blocks down to 1" set the body back down. It fits so nice. The body looks so close to stock now. So it can be done with a 1" body lift. If I wanted to re-adjust the passanger side exhaust flange down more, I think I could get away with no body lift. Right now that is the only thing holding me up. The only other reason I like the 1" body lift, is if I need to change the clutch it gives me a little room to drop the transmission and still get to the top bolts for the bell housing.
Had a chance to drive it highway speeds and on some pretty descent hills around here. I am running 305x70x16 Toyo MT's on factory aluminum landcruiser mags. I have 4:88 gears in it. I was at the bottom of the 1/2 mile long hill in 5th gear doing 55 mpg. I maintained 5th all the way to the top and was doing 80 at the top. I would like to jump down to 4:56 or 4:30 gears again. This originally had 4:30 gears in it. I replaced with 4:88's when I had the 3.0 and taller tires. This rig is so awsome to drive now. I am so happy that I made the leap and kept to getting this thing running again.

Thanks guys.
The added weight of the 2uz and the price those engines fetch would put it out of range for how much I want to invest in a toy, but they are cool. If you do it create a build page and take lots of photos so we can all see your rig as it grows. Good luck.

I re-read through your thread. I am glad you where able to keep the truck waiting for you to be ready. I am sorry your got time with your parents got cut short. I will take your advice. I moved my dad up with me for a year to get on his feet. Even though he's here I don't make as much effort as I should to hang out. Like all parents he can dive me nuts and makes me worry.
On a happier topic.
I love your shop!
I currently work in a diamond mine as a scaffolder. I scaffold because I was in my late 20's and still had not figured out what I needed to do other than make more money. I fell into it pretty much. I am about done with working away for so long and my job is very physically demanding, I am currently off with a disk injury which is healing. I have some investment goals within reach but then I want to get a mechanics apprenticeship to do exactly what you have!!!
Good for you buddy!
I want to learn body work and rust repair, a common Toyota issue. Plus then I can fix up cars to flip in hopes of making up some money during my apprenticeship. I know I will be taking a massive pay cut but it will be to do something I want to do not just what needs to be done.
I'll start my apprenticeship in Canada then complete it in Australia where my fiance is from. She will want to move back so I'll be in Toyota heaven. Oddly though, they do not have a lot of Toyota offroad shops. You don't often see a 4Runner or a Landcruiser even on 35's.
When I take mine with me it will look like a monster truck in comparison.
I plan on moving back to BC for awhile first. I should pay you a visit when I show the missus America. She wants to see as much of Canada and the US as possible.
Who knows, maybe I can export off road parts from you in the future or build them under license.
In regards to your engine choice.
How much more does the 2UZ weigh and what did you think of as considerations? Nothing for me is set in stone yet. I'm saving up already but not sure what exactly for.
In general, bigger Toyota engine, SAS with Toyota parts. Most likely FJ80 axles to go wider and stronger. Relocate the fuel tank to the rear as well. Roll cage inside and rear quarter panel armour. Transmission and T-case options are open. I have a gear driven one in the garage and you are happy with your R150 right? Marlin Crawler sells rebuilt ones and rebuild kits. I'd do it myself but I've been told its pretty hard. If I work in a garage maybe they would help me for cheaper?
I want to use as much Toyota parts or Toyota compatible for exploring remote areas. In remote Australia somewhere I snap an axle in a Dana 60 I'm screwed. If I can use stock FJ80/Hilux/4Runner stuff in a pinch I can get it rolling again.
This is my reasoning anyway.
Lastly, I love how that 1UZ looks like it's supposed to be in there. Tidy work!

Now on to your toyota questions. We actually have family in Melbourne. I am itching to get down there and see all the toyota's my self. They have come and visited my family here about 6 times in the last 8 years. It is toyota heaven down there. We have actually thought about moving to OZ but things are so expensive. You will love it. The only down side is haveing to have a plate on your bumper that says left hand drive. Kinda sticks out to everybody.
I would be happy to meet up with you when you guys tour the US. Let me know the dates you plan on being down this way.
The 2UZ engine weights about 550 pounds. Where the 1UZ engine weights about 375 pounds. So quite a bit of difference.
I am very happy with the R150F. Nice thing is you will have access to a bellhousing manufacture down in OZ. I like the fact that I use a combination of common clutch parts found in Toyota's. I actually own a 2002 Tundra 4x4 access cab truck as well, plus a 2011 Supercharged double cab tacoma too! I thought long and hard about the automatic tranny that sits in the tundra and putting one in this runner, but after alot of going back and forwarth I went with the stick. I left all the wiring harness taped up and tucked up and out of the way so I can swap to auto if need/want to in the future.
As for the axles. I have BJ spacers, downey torsion bars, downey rear springs, ect for suspension lift right now. I also have an 85 toy front axle. I thought about the FZJ80 front axle but didn't want my front end so wide that it looked funny compared to the rear. The rear axles from the LC don't fit on the 4runner because of gas tank interferance. Since your moving yours then your gonna be ok, I plan on adding a rear tank as well, but am leaving the front tank. I want to be able to hold some serious fuel for long range exploration. So I am using some trail gear parts, some front range off road parts, old man emu parts to put together my front end. I have hubs and flanges from an IFS 4runner I parted out a couple of years ago. With those hub flanges, the IFS hubs, IFS calipers, FJ62 rotors, I can match my rear axle. Doing this will make it much easier to find parts if need be in the future. I can then install the FZJ high pionion 3rd in my front axle.
Easy and reliable, parts avaliable pretty much anywhere. I am a die hard toyota fan, and wanted the 4runner to look like it came from the factory the way I installed it in the rig. For the most part I thing it does.
I look forward to seeing your rig grow. Keep in touch, and when the time comes I am sure we can work it out to supply you with parts.
As for rebuilding the tranny. Money is always used best if used wisely. If you are not comfortable rebuilding your tranny then buying one from Marlin can't be beat. If you don't mind a little bit of hard work, and learning then I say rebuild it your self using Marlin parts. Either way you can't go wrong using Marlin's stuff. Secondly if you do it your self and run into a snag, you can call marlin and they are really good about helping there customers out. Can't do that with most other companies. I am thought about the tranny/transfercase delima. I am not in need of duel cases right now, but I am on the look out for parts and pieces and will eventually have to do something so I can add them.
Don't forget to spend a little time with "dad" even if he drives you crazy. Once he is gone, you will miss it so very much!

I just installed a front quick disconnect for jumper cables and winch today. I have also measured out so I can start building my sliders too, and roof rack!

My missus is from Melbourne. Lived over that way for a fair few years already. I'm a dual citizen. It is bloody hot. Especially in West Australia. I worked in the mines over there. VERY hot, 50C.
I don't plan to leave it left hand drive. I can get a new dash and modify mine to be right hand drive.
Also, a T100 rear axle has a centre diff and the same width as the front FJ80.

That is what I hear, the family actually has a beach house down in Aries so when it gets really hot they can cool off in the tidal pools and such.
I had not thought about the T100 axle. Good choice. Might be harder to find down there if you bend an axle though. But still a good thought. I will have to put some more research into that as an option.
I am glad to see you plan on changing it over to right hand drive. I have thought about finding a good early ninties double cab over there once I make it that way and then have it imported back to the states. I figure if I wait until 2015 to get there I should be able to get at least a 1990 imported here. I have a real appriciation for the double cab diesel hilux's with a straight axle already. Jealous until I can get my hands on one of those.
