1st gen 4Runner Zuk mod questions
So i have an 86 4runner. its IFS and has the stock leafs in the rear. they sag like crazy. my tires are 265/75/15s and i want it to ride about stock height. i was thinking about the ZUK mod but was wondering if its safe, whats the best springs to use for the cheapest and whats the easiest ways to put the without cutting. and if i put them in do i need to watch out for a lot of flew in the back so they wont shoot out? Thanks. (if i can get pics of her i will)

That's a clean looking 4runner!
I've done the "no cut" Zuk mod on both my 86' and 87' 4runner's. On my 86' I used 97' and up^ Jeep TJ front coil springs. They worked well, fit snug around the upper bump stop and the smaller end fit perfectly around the rubber bump stop. I was pretty happy with them, then sold them when I got my 6" AllPro rear lift.
On my 87' I ordered what I thought was jeep TJ front coils, but I'm pretty sure they sent me the rear coils, which still work, but I don't like the ride nearly as much, i have alot of potholes in my driveway, and the ride is a bit harsh. I will probably replace them with some front coils. Price wise they are cheap, you can find them for $20-$50 range on eBay or your local pic n pull. Alot of people use Black Magic springs too, but I don't have any experience with those. I think they are safe, I've never heard of anyone having any problems running them. I ran them on my 86' for a couple years, and flexed the suspension pretty good, they won't just pop out, lol. (My 86 had a SAS front end so would flex more than your IFS will.) Most people use a spring compressor to get the spring in there, I just used a bottle Jack between the frame and the leafsprings and compressed the spring a little with a ratchet strap. Hope this helps you out some.

I have tj springs on my rear end. I blew a shock out because I removed my bumper and tow package so my rear end is lifted about 3 inches I clear 33" no problem and and totally feel a difference. Mine are from a 08 I believe so probably more life in them then older springs but that's hard to say because this is the only one I've ridden in some people use fj80 springs as well.
Didn't even think about using a bottle jack great idea

Yeah it works pretty good. I had a jack stand under the frame in front of the rear wheel well I was working on and with the wheel already removed I pulled the jack out from under the axel on that side so it was kinda just hanging there. I disconnected the shock from the lower mount, then used the bottle jack between the frame and leaf spring. I barely had to compress the coil spring at all to get it in there.
To the OP, here's a couple poser pics of my sas'd 86' flexing out. In the 2nd pic you can make out the coil spring, never had a problem while running them, and the thing cornered better than my stock 87'!

Mine was made by Smittybuilt, you could check their website, or keep a look out on Craigslist, I see them on there now and then. You should start a build thread on yours to keep track of your progress!

Yea its a smitty built double tube bumper. they quit making them for Toyota a few years ago and theyre hard to find around where I live. If you find one please think of me haha. thanks
And yea ive thought about making a build thread and I might haha. Just have to figure everything out

You might check the Yotatech Classified too or put in your own WTB add. I've seen alot of people buy Toyota's with that style bumper on them, and replace them with something newer.
