85 Extra Cab Saved from Crusher

Wow Terry i wish i had your work ethic, i can hardly stay motivated on the smallest projects lately, even when I have the time to work on them. I feel like i havent accomplish much this summer, I don't know how you do it with multiple projects, and fixing up your shop on top of it! You got to be one of the hardest working Toyota enthusiast on YotaTech!
I really like the color your thinking of using, looks really good! Look forward to seeing it painted!

Hello Cyberhorn...That had hcrossed my mind, but masking and resetting body lines is two of my least favorite. I think I have the height, it is more of the man power to get it off.
Thanks Ed... Last summer and winter it was to miserable to get much done. Last winter really drove me nuts. I have not sit that still in a long time. I do stay busy. When I was single, I never had TV as I as always doing something.
I want this truck to last for quite sometime as long as I can get parts and gasoline for it.
You will see why below one of the reasons I am doing such a tear down on it on top that I want it as nice as I can make it.

I have already done a lot of cleaning on the cowl area and still got more out of the cowl and this is what has come down from the cowl to the fender. I have the inner fender out at this time.
Another reason is to straighten out POs prior work. They used a torx head bolt in the seat belt and buggered it up into thread holes. Had to cut it out. Also removed 15 pounds of speaker wire.
Grinding out some of the rust. I have 3 rust holes that are going to need to be patched in, I will find some rust converter and cover it with POR-15. Here you can see where I removed some of it.
I have showed in my other builds about cleaning out the rocker panels to clear the drain holes. When I first got this truck, I found a mouse skeleton in the passenger roceker panel. Here I am blowing some of the dirt/mouses old house out the front hole in the kick panel. I stuck the yellow plug inside the kick panel hole to show where to get some of the dirt out,
Using an air hose in the cutouts on the top of the rocker panel, just underneath the door trim will push trash to the rear of the cab.
Here is the hole in the back of all cabs where some more nasty gunk came out of.
This is not even half of the trash that has come out of the rocker panel. I had cleaned it up earlier when I had to remove the torx bolt. It is nasty. The "V" notch on the bottom of your rocker panels on the inside is the drain holes.
Here is the hole I was mention just above. More good stuff.

Looking for advice. I have gray SR5 door panels. I am going to go with the tan color on the body. Will gray interior and tan exterior match? I would like to have a tan or brown interior to match the exterior but I do like the SR5 panels.
Also my truck has started out as a junk truck and looks filthy with all of the trash in it. The 86 truck I just finished and the 91 that you see in my profile were some nice trucks when I started on them. Even nice trucks can have alot of trash in them. The way I found out about the drain holes is when I had the 91, I could hear water sloshing around in the rocker panels. The winshield leaked and ran all of the water inside the kick panel down to the rocker panels. I have already cleaned the floor inside of this cab but it was nasty!!!! I wll be posting some more pics later. This cab is tore down.

Those shoes look like they'd fit a two year old. Just the age that likes to throw shoes out the window. The parents probably couldn't imagine where they went.
The stuff coming from the frame makes me want to hurl. They look like tiny bones. Mouse?
I've lost track. Is this the truck that will have the Downey bed?

Hello Cyberhorn... I try and proof read when I post and still missed that, lol it was funny. Found a few more corrections in the last edit as well.
Hello Nervo19.. Most of it is some kind of foam that the mouse had shredded. A lot of sand. Wasnt any bones in the gunk that came out of it. I dont think the Downey bed would look good on an extended cab. I still need to get a cab, motor, and rear axle for that truck. I am slowly getting things around for it and it will be a long build. I want to get my 2 runners and this truck done before I start on it as it will be a slow build just because I want as much things new on it as possible. That one is still a couple of years off yet. It is a standard cab which is crowded for me and is just going to be a show toy. Mostly I just want it for a full nut and bolt restoration like Slacker and kawazx636 build.
This 85 is going to be my daily driver. Not having a truck around the house has been a real pain in the neck. It is just going to be a clean, nice looking everyday truck.
Hello kornhuskerwizard.. People can be dirtier. I have seen some things in cars at the salvage yard and wow, that can be a health hazard. I will take bleach water and give it a good scrubbing. Also I will add Peel and Seal to the walls and floor and that will help make it clean as well. Mice dont do old trucks any favors. A friend of mine has truck has gotten damaged from mice eating up his wires.

The drivers front fender has been bumped in the past. With my pointer finger you can see where the paint flaked off from a bend and my middle finger is showing a crease. I was able to hammer and dolly it back into shape.
Got the cab floor cleaned and stripped out.
Someone added a non Toyota antenna so I will need to do some repairs on the antenna hole.
I had to replace a TPS on Mistys runner. Built two saw horses and cab is just waiting for me to get some help to lift it off.

Hello Chris... Another guy and I have lifted standard cabs by ourselves before but the extra weight of the extended cab adds mopre then expected. I had two other guys over here last night and we just wasnt able to. Now I get to pull the drive train and the guys wont be around til tonight but I have to work so I got the cherry picker and will have to stair step it up a little at a time to clear the front shock hoops. A little of a set back.

I got the motor all disconnected from the transmission and now am getting juiced up on coffee and will start pulling it and then the transmission. I was wanting to keep the drive train in to conserve space but getting it high enough to clear is going to be an issue.
I changed the plugs on the 3rd gen runner the other day and ripped a boot on the coil pack. I ordered a Denso plug set from ebay thinking that would get it fixed. They only come with the wires and you cant get just one boot for the coil. So I lost some time going to Joplin to get another Denos coil with the boot attached. Last night the skeeters ran me out of the shop but am hopeing to have a better day today.
My neighbor is a retired bodyman of 40 years and was looking at the condition of my 85 was really impressed how solid it is. I told him I was going to cut the 3 rust holes out of the floor board and have them welded in. He says he is going to show me a different way of fixing them later on. He is leaving for a week vacation and should show me when he gets back. Looking forward to see how he does it.

Hello Old blue... Mice and rats make a mess of any truck setting to long. A friend of mine has a runner sitting and we chased a mouse out of his intake. Luckily he hadnt chewed any wires. This is my second build where I have had to deal with them. This one got away but I did catch the one in my runner. He had a bad day when I got done with him.

I got the motor out. Will need to do some re arranging. Also I loaned my nephew my cherry picker. He lifted a Dodge Cummins Diesel with it and those are heavy motors. Just for safety really pay attention to the weight limits. He messed up my cherry picker and I will have to get it straightened back out. I eventually want to get a collapsable cherry picker for space saving. Harbor Freight stuff works great for these motors but even their engine stands will not support a full size Chevy V8 motor. The cherry picker has pulled alot of 22re motors with no problems and probably would of pulled his diesel had he not had the arm so far out that the leverage was to much for the cherry picker.
On a solid axle truck, I support the tranny with some 2x4s across the leaf springs.
Where my nephew over extended the cherry picker. Just pay attention to the weight amount you are lifting.
Tranny is out and I got it degreasing. I originally was going to get the truck running and then remove the body and clean everything but that has changed. It will be getting cleaned soon. Got two little boys that I am going to put to work on this.

Is that legal? LOL!
Nice job, Terry!
The sound dampening treatment no floor still looks good! The cowl system design needs improvement. The grill on top allows leave, etc to come in and cowl traps them. I will modify mine; put mesh right under the grill to keep leaves out, in the first place, but allow water for washing in.

Hello Ray... My dad worked my butt off when I was a kid, he got away with it and I am hoping I can too.lol, they actually like helping on things like this. I will eventually get a cowl cover from Slacker, it might be a while but I am going to try an experiment of my own and see if I cant get it covered. Hoping it works out. Either doing what you are talking about or just fiber glassing the whole thing closed.
Hello Cyerhorn... I am afraid this thing will eventually be going to the scrap pile. It can still be used for light stuff but it heavy lifting days are over. I am using it against my better judgement, but getting everybody I need to lift it off is not going to be easy with every bodys schedules. I got some red neck in me too as you are about to see.

Started to lif the body off and have it a snag. I am taking a break and catching up on what I have done so far and thinking of how to get the rear up 2 more inches to clear the frame. In the mean time here is what I have done so far and how I have made some clearance.
The Power Steering lines were higher then I thought so I removed them.
Flattened the tires and remove wheel dollies.
Cut the shock bolts off. These are junk anyways.
That gave an inch more clearance.
How I lifted the back was with a strap with some hooks on the inner holes.
Using the cherry picker to lift the back end up.
I need two more inches for the shock hoops to clear the cross boards on the saw horse. grrrr. Front is supported by concrete blocks and the cherry picker is also there for extra support.
