Hello kornhuskerwizard... It was newer, I will explain after I get the headliner section posted. Toyota threw me another curve ball.

Hello Mark...Like Cyberhorn said, it is glued in there. Getting the trim on and off is a real pain. Even the windshield guys have problems with it. It is something that I have done. You can pull the windshield and clean the channel out and seal it up as it is most likely rusted up. That will save the windshield guys a ton of time and you dont have to pay their hourly wage. They will actually appreciate it.

Hello Cyberhorn...I got that AC hose and will get it posted on your thread later today or tonite. I will get it in the mail tomorrow.

Some one put a lovely crap headliner in that was cloth and was rotting away. It looks worse then what it is. I got another one out of the salvage. Not factory and they did a poor job and you can tell they used regular spray paint.

While waiting for the glue to set up, I cleaned the map light bracket of all the glue they had over it. It needs to be clean as it is a ground for the maplight.

I have showed how to install maplights in other builds. Here is the two screws I was never able to get pics of.

Here is Misty helping with getting the front trim on the front to hold the headliner in. Two people will make this easier.

The back windows and rear glass seals help hold the headliner in as well. This is as far as I can go for now as the window edges need cleaned up from head liner left in before and some rust on th lower area.

Here is most of the headliner in. I need to pull the rear glass as it is being difficult. I will replace the trim on the inside at a later time as they just used regular spary paint and it looks terrible. It will hold the headliner in place for the time being. They also tinted the windows purple. I will try and clean them up but I do know where a nice set is at if I need them.

I ground most of the rust out. I will have to work some more on it as the electric tools wont get into it. Will try another grinder that might get into it.

The truck I have been getting the parts off was produced in May of 87. I assumed it was and 87. It had red injectors in it so that should make it an 88. I always thought that August or September was the dividing line between years. The owner of the yard said sometimes Toyota would switch half way thru the year. Looks like I got one of those trucks for parts.

Here is the parts truck. They had it zipped tied. I later found out why and will explain below.

The injector harness I got today has the 88 and the 89 and newer injector connectors on it. 88's are a one year only and 89 and newer are all the same. They both have red tops on them. If you look closely, you will see the fool proof tabs are different and what keeps you from getting them mixed up. The connector on the right is broken as they forced the 89 connector on to the 88 injector. PO apparently didnt know the red tops are different and apparently made it work or that is why it is in the yard as they could not get it running.

I actually had a spare 88 harness but just incase something was different, I went ahead and bought it anyways. The one I have is in excellent shape so will use it instead. I think I have an 88 computer somewhere so will be swapping out injectors againnnn!!!
This one still has the part number tag on it. The one from the yard was missing it. This is quite similar to what you will see on the main harness just above the steering column.

Urethane is the proper sealant/adhesive for windshield.

Yeah, better to have glass shop do the work. Basically, you'd want:
  • Tech to take off the glass,
  • You remove the old sealant, leaving a thin layer of old urethane on un-rusted, undamaged pinch weld (because new urethane would stick better to old clean urethane)
  • You repair any rust spots,
  • Tech comes back to re-install glass using urethane adhesive.

An option for removing rust-magnet is on my sig.

Cheers!

Hello Cyberhorn... It is all purple. I am thinking they got a $10 roll of it some where and did it themselves. It is the same color everywhere. I am hoping it comes off easily.

Hello Ray... I will be removing my rust magnet. I have BB gun hole in my windshield and it is just worn looking anyways. That urethane is some nasty stuff and I am betting I have some rust repair in the channel as well. I will be doing what you did with yours.

Well, I am kind of stumped. The Main harness is May 87 and it is in excellent shape. I removed it myself from the parts truck. It could still be the white injectors that it needs and I am still trying to figure that one out. I am wondering if the parts truck I took the harnesses off of if it still has the original Injector Harness. What I have now will run the truck but I want everything working right and the wipers actually are thru the Main Harness and not the Injector Harness. It is looking like Toyota may have wired the wipers in different ways so I am looking into that.

These truck bodies from 84-88 are all identical when stripped down. Mostly what determines what year you have is the grill, axle, stripping, and the wiring in these trucks. So the year wiring that you put in doesnt really matter, it is just getting one good wiring set and that may be what is gettign me stuck for awhile. I will get it and it is just going to take a little digging to figure out which wire set I need to go. If worst comes to worst, I do have a couple of 22r harnesses that I can put in and install a Webber. I want fuel injection and it will be fuel injected when I am finished with it, but that will get it moving until I can get it figured out.

warm the window an find an edge with a thin razor an try to get the layers to peel off is about all you can do an theres two layers the tint an adhesive usually the adhesive stays stuck to the glass

theres several vids on youtube about it id recomend watching them i did when i removed the messed up tint off my rear window and had to avoid ruining the defogger grid so i could check it an make sure things were good (they were)

Hello Cyberhorn.. I did check out some youtube videos and they used a steamer for clothes. At first I thought I would never use one other then to peel off the tint. Now I am thinking I will go ahead and get one as I might could use it for cleaning other things. I am probably have to use that for the door glass and the back glass. The windshield has some on the top of it but I am going to replace the windshield so not worried about it.

The plans I had for my days off was about the complete opposite but guess I still got more done then I thought I would. I was on the road a lot getting tires on Misty's runner and going to the salvage yard. If all goes as planned I may be going back to get a few more interior items but will have to wait and see on that. One thing I kick myself in the butt on is I didn't get the VIN off of the truck that I am getting parts off of as that would tell me what injectors that it is supposed to have on the harness.

I soaked my extra cab glass in hot water and each glass had two layers of tint on it. With the hot water and a razor blade to get an edge lifted up, it peeled off quite easily and looks great. One of the pictures didn't turn out but there are actually 3 drain holes at the bottom of the rubber seal. Mine were clogged with mud.

Soaking and the 4 layer of film for both glasses.

I am glad your days off were close to at least getting some of your plans completed.
I have had 3 days scheduled off for trail runs that I have missed because life has come up and changed plans on me

I admire you have a few builds going on. I have a hard time keeping track of what shelf I stuff some parts on for one truck

Thanks dropzone... I have been trying to get 3 or 4 days off as well and that just keeps getting put off. Everytime I try we have something coming up. Guys I work with are mostly older guys. One retired, one has got cancer, one had hip replacement and one took a job else where and we are short handed. There is only 8 of us. I am ready for some time off. I think that what plans are for to see if you can keep them and most likely not.

Funny you should mention shelves. On the way home from work I actually picked up some shelf brackets. I am trying to make use of my overhead space and working on getting things organized at in the shop and storage shed has been another project I have been doing on the side. Starting to make some progress.

Things should take off here shortly. I have been slow on some of my builds but we have been working on getting other things taken care of and just about got it. I am really going to push for getting my trucks in great shape in the next 6-12 months. Misty was mentioning about wanting a new car and I convinced her one year of upgrade/repair payment is better then new carpayments. I get AC and cruise on hers I should win this one.

Hello kornhuskerwizard....If you can find another one to practice on and get the metal bows, you could use it as a pattern. Biggest part is getting where the metal bow go thru the material at the proper distance. Using an existing headliner is an easy job and nothing to be worried about. I am going to post more pictures below to show what else holds the headliner in and hope it helps with how to swap a headliner and maybe help ease the fear of making a headliner.

I took the backglass out to see if I can get the film off of it tonight. I may eventually swap out the backglass as it has one of the old style phone antennas in it. The rubber seal just pinches it in on the back side.

Another option I have not run into. It has two wires and I was wondering if it is heated mirrors? The mirror moves mechanically for adjustments. Removed mirrors for body work.

Here is the passenger mirror and it is broken out. The mechanical part still functions so I can have my local glass shop to make me a mirror. Any ideas what option is on this mirror to have electrical wires running to it?

Started roughing in my door and will say I am impressed with the condition of this truck overall. (Other then the wiring issues) Lower back corner of the door is chipped from rocks due to no mud flaps but once I got below the second coat of paint, it is really great condition. Really happy with my little crusher bound truck. I did miss two small spots and will get them soon.

I want to keep up with my build cost. Below is what I Have Spent and Expect to Spend. I got the truck for free as I bought it with another truck and the frame was rusted to the front of the axle. It was to be a driver and I parted it out as it would of been unsafe to drive. Actual cost of my 85 is zero for purchasing and actually a little profit from parting the other truck, but I am staying at zero for cost.

Spent so far.
Motor Rebuild, I had a head so no cost for it......800
Clutch............................................ ...............150
SR5 Tach.............................................. ..........20
SR5 Door Panels............................................ ..40
Main Harness........................................... ........50
Injector Harness........................................... ..100
Denso Plug Wires............................................. 25
Denso Plugs............................................. ........ 8
O2 Sensor............................................ ...........25
Peel and Seal.............................................. .....15
Paint............................................. ................207
Sandpaper...(1500 grit)....................................10
Total so far............................................... ...1469

Expect to Spend.
Paint............................................. ................400
Tires............................................. ................600
Brakes............................................ ................50
Front Axle Rebuild........................................... 250
Distributor Rotor............................................. .25
Distributor Cap............................................... ..15
Fluids............................................ .................100
Carpet............................................ ................100
Interior Paint............................................. .......40
Windshield........................................ ..............160
Wiper Blades............................................ ........20
Peel and Seal.............................................. ......40
Exhaust........................................... ...............130
Stripes........................................... .................200
Front Bumper............................................ ........75
Tail Light Conversion Kit.....................................25

I caught a break on paint as I had some clear coat from 2 previous projects that I was able to use. Peel and Seal cost will go up a little bit. To replace some supplies I had such as a roll of 80 and 180 grit sandpaper disk, I would have to add another $70 but I do not need it anymore for this project. It will get added to some future project.

Right now I will have about 3500 into it and it will be what I want once I get past the wiring harness issue. Sure there will be a few more expenses to come along but this is in the ball park of what I think it will cost and will keep this updated for myself.

Wouldn't the mirror have a separate wire for each the x and y axis movement?
Never had a mirror apart so I don't know. I doubt the extra wire would be for heated mirrors. .

Hello dropzone...I was thinking there would be two wires for each motor to control a vertical and horizontal movement. I took it apart and it is for an electrical movement of the mirror. I am weak in electric and was just positive that there would be two wires for each motor. This was the first time for me taking a mirror apart and I took it only far enough to see what was behind the mirror. It looks like it would be easy to disassemble.

I was sure there would have to be a supply and return wire for a motor and somehow I am sure there is but this is just a power mirror for directional operation. To get it disassembled, just remove the screw in the bottom of the mirror and the assembly will come out. It looks like it would easily disassemble further if need be but this was as far as I needed to go. My truck harness isn't wired for electric mirrors and I actually prefer manual things over power as less likely to have future problems. These mirrors can be set manually with ease.

I did clean them up and paint them. They are pitted and had some dead plastic on them so I took a soft bristle brush and cleaned them up with some Simple Green and then coated them with some Trim paint. These will work for now until get a better looking set at a later time.

Some other things I grabbed at the yard was some clamps as I was needing one. They were oily and rusty. A little time on a bench wire brush grinder and WD-40 and they are good as new. The specially formed hoses can add up quick when getting them at a dealer or elsewhere and normally you can get them at a parts store. The yard doesn't charge for hoses so I will start stocking up on them next time I am there. You can usually find a few good ones and these can drive the cost of a build up. Got a brake hose for Jason as his got burnt in the engine fire.

Got all of the tint off of the back glass. I just ran hot water over it and then with a razor blade it came off easily. I will use this one for a while until I find a better one. It has the old style phone antenna on it and it is missing a lock assembly.

I have seen people cut the back glass out. It is best to remove the glass with the seal. You have to work from the inside of the truck and peel the edge of the rubber seal off of the pinch weld and push out. These seals can be expensive and hard to find. This one had a lot of gunk in the seal and the drain holes were clogged. Try to show it in the picture. Also trying to show it is best to remove as much as possible when painting. Here the PO left it on and when painting. I scrape it with a razor blade to get the paint off. I hold it 90 degrees to keep from cutting it.

I prefer to use a brass tooth brush and some Simple Green to get all of the dead rubber off of the seal. Any liquid detergent will work. All I had at the time was a bigger brush but with a light scrapping action, it will make a seal look new again. Got all of the tracks cleaned as well.

It wont be long until it is to cold to paint. Was talking to Misty about the finances and how soon it we would be able to paint. She said I could probably paint Friday. No way will I have it ready that soon. I would have one or two long day just in bodywork to finish up and since this will set me back for a month on the other trucks that I want and need to work on, I will try to get it painted soon and do detail things on it for a while. We will see how soon I can get it painted.

Still thinking of going with tan. I do not care for masking and since the wiring is kicking my butt, I am going to strip it down so that basically I am just going to have to mask the dash. I pulled the windshield and it has bullet holes in it and it did crack on me but it is going to get painted over. So no masking out side the windshield, Whoppee!!!

Removed windshield and rust magnent. I have cleaned it up some but still have a ways to go.

The top part of the glue came off easily as it was just rust holding the glue. I will grind and get some sealer over it. Here is where some of the glue actually held well and is being difficult to get off.

This cowl was loaded with debris. Some toward the front you cant see and I had pulled alot of it out. Notice there is no fourth hole in the cowl in this picture. There is in the next as I was unable to get the debris out of the cowl on passenger side. Toyota punches out 2 big holes on the driver side an only one on the passenger side. This is the one I am getting ready to cut out.

Here is the fourth hole I am getting ready to cut out. Under neath it is alot of debris and the stove pipe I mention about occasionally.

Here I almost followed all of the factory lines to get access to the cowl. Slacker sells a ventless cowl cover that I am eventually going to buy off of him to keep all the trash out of my cowl and ventilation system.

With the opening I cut into the cowl, you can now see the stove pipe I mention. Just the name I came up with. Debris will over flow this and go straight to your blower and either to your AC system if you have it or heater core if you dont have an AC system. The yellow plug my pointer finger is the computer plug laying on the floor. Normally this is where you would see the blower. My middle finger is on the stove pipe and the stove pipe is only an inch or so tall. Does not take uch for debris to fall down to the blower.

I will update some more cleaning I did later, but I did pull a pair of baby shoes out of the speaker in the side of the cab.

From the time I got this truck, I had full intentions of doing a frame off restoration. I originally wanted to get it running and then pull the body off and do them. I have it running but not all the functions operating like I want so that is going to be winter project. At this time I now have the body ready to come off and it stripped down quite a bit. I am hoping next Friday to paint the body if all goes well. I am going to put in some long days getting the body ready for paint and getting the shop ready to paint in.

I am going to have to find some man power to lift the cab off of the frame and to clear the motor. I am hoping I have enough height in my shop to clear the motor. We will see. From my measurements, I have about 4 1/2 feet. I think I only need to lift about 3 feet.

Removing all of the things in the engine bay so as I can paint the engine bay. I do not like seeing a different colored bay when the body is a different color. Should not be much white showing when I get done. Most trucks I have painted have been red or white. So want to do something different.

Going to build me some saw horses to set the cab on. My carpentry skills are not the best but should work for what I need.
