Thanks 85sr5excab...So far I am thinking I finally have everything that I need so far. Some of the things the previous owner/s have done, I think I can fix or have. Just got done reading your pm. I try to put alot of the information that I find on this build and other builds or that I find on the 88. I am sure there is a few things that I have missed on my 86 but it will eventually get put on the 88s build.
The 84/85 builds do get overlooked, I missed them for the longest time til I found them on Yotatech. I have missed posting alot of pics myself and is one regret I have on my builds and life in general. Occasionally I like to go thru my threads and see where I have been and where I am at. It seems like it may never get completed but it does eventually happen. When you are done, it makes you wonder if it was even the same truck you started with. Time flies and it is a great trip down memory lane.
Pictures dont show how bad my runners were and I am quite satisfied at how they have turned out. Still have a ways to go to where I want them, but it is slow steady progress. I need to get some pictures of the parts I just finished for the 86, but now even the smallest of pieces are starting to make me feel like there is a sense of accomplishtment, mostly because I know what I had to go thru to get it to where it is at.
Hello Cyberhorn... I was joking on your thread recently about how to get the metal tabs off on the end caps. Just drive it how it came from the factory without the carriage bolts. It works!!! Just hauling my truck to the carwash took it right off. It is ok for now as it was in bad shape, but it was better then what I had for the time being, grrr.

Here is one of the previous owners fixes. They used a Phillps screw to hold the endcap on. I have soaked this screw in every rust dissolver I have to get it to break free and it just wouldnt. I had to pull the screw thru the end cap to get it out and it cracked the end cap. Then I had to take a pair of vise grips to get the screw out and it broke. Luckily I was able to get it out with a pair of vise grips on the back side. Hopefully I can just tap the threads and get this side to work.
On the drivers side, just taking it to the carwash took the end cap off. This is one reason I use carriage bolts to replace the metal plate on the end caps.
Got it out, but did crack the endcap. Will eventually replace it with new ones.
I really like this bumper, but when I took the bed off I could tell how damaged it was. I have a chrome bumper that I will eventually use. It was what came on my 86 Runner when I first got it. My 85 has been temporarily evicted as I am getting the shop ready to paint the 86 extracab.I also got the frame cleaned up and scrubbed down. Will be painting it a little later. For now I got the area where the fuel tank sits painted. I want to get the fuel tank back in here fairly shortly.
It is sitting tilted as I have a stock tire on the passenger side. The end of the frame was banged up and I was able to get it fairly straight. Seems like every truck I work on has a little end damged. Did get a lot of mud out of the inside of the frame. I will take it to the carwash again to get the front part of the frame at a later time.

i do wish i could have taken mine to the frame but id had no way to lift the entire cab off safely and the dis-assembly! Oy've what a PITA that'd been covers head dozens of broken bolts heating an drilling them hours of vice grips twisting to get them out *shudders*
if you like terry i can link you the auction i got 2 end caps for 24ish bucks they're good solid plastic
you could till then use a soldering iron to melt the plastic in the back like stitching it via melted spots dont go all the way through to the front
so did ya pick a color for the extended cab? you didnt say if you liked any of the colors i swapped around

Thanks cyberhorn...I would like that link. A runner is harder to do for a body off. I had mine off but it was just lifted, it wasnt completely removed on the runner. This truck is going to get the body off, it is just going to be a little bit. I like that rootbeer color but not sure if I could get the paint mixer to get that color. I really like that. More then likely it will be the burnt orange/tangerine color. Not set in stone just yet. I still have a little time to decide. I am going to be cutting it close to getting it painted. Seems like alot of things keep coming up. I want to paint it before the weather turns cold.

A reference picture for me. I keep forgetting how the EGR is connected for the hoses.
Another reference for the fuel sender. The tip of the triangle where the wires comes out points at the 7 oclock positon or toward the left rear bumper.
Tank is in. I need another fuel sender unit but this will keep the weather out for now. Fuel system is completed otherwise.

Thanks for the end cap link. I am still not sure which one I like but moved them from your PM to here. I am not a fan of brown, but the second color could be done and look great I think.

Thanks Aviator and Cyberhorn... The way this year is looking just due to the heat and then it will turn cold all at once, I am not sure if I will be able to get the bodywork done in time to paint. I am thinking of leaving it as it is for now and just get it on the road. Still havent decided on any color. I still need to paint the 86 but the temps just arent cooperating. Got it all ready to go but with a shop that I have to count on the weather I am just letting it sit as well.
I am only working on the 85 when early in the mornings or when I do get a couple of descent hours of tempertures. It is kind of depressing as these two trucks are taking longer then any of the other trucks I have done. I am hoping to have a mild winter. I really thought I would of had the 85 done in 6 months once I really got after it. Trucks are easier in my opinion. Without the bed it is nearly halfway done and not much to an interior.

Here is how the days started. I was up at the crack of dawn and went to the Toyota dealer to get some exhaust studs. They didnt have any, 20 miles away,grrr.. I will go to the dealer that I normally use. I lost alot of time just doing that. I figured I would need to have them ordered but might luck out.
Even with exhaust studs, it wouldnt do me much good. I have plenty of electrical problems anyways. The fuse box is a mess. I got all but one wire on back and will fix it later. I used the 86 Runner for guidance on fuses, and routing, etc...
Here is what the PO had for the negative cable. I did use it but will get another cable in town. Just a braided wire, huhhh??
I snipped the end of the wires for the stereo as the PO had alot of bare wires. I have a new harness to splice into it and get it all back to factory and will complete it later.
This is 10 times better then what it was.

Some Success!!! Here is what works.
Wipers.
High Beam indicator.
I can hear the Fuel Pump and COR.
I bumped the starter and it will turn the motor.
Headlight now work, High and Low Beam.
Put in a Heater Control Switch. All 4 speeds work.
Put in Flasher Relay and Indicators Work.
Maplights work.
Repaired Door Switch and Door Buzzer works. (Will silence that and show later how to do it, Door Buzzer box also operates domelight).
Front Blinkers work.
Had alternator tested and it is passing auto parts store test. Installed in truck now.
Need to look at or fix.
Headlights dont work.............................................. ... Fixed, just had to clean connections.
I need to install a heater control to check blower motor....Fixed, installed a switch, need and entire heater contol and that is in the works.
Blinkers dont work but I dont have them hooked up and need a Flasher Relay...Fixed.
Need to check windshield water pump...........................Works but needs replaced, but is getting power and spinning.
Dashlights
Horn
Domelight..Replaced bulb. Will work at switch, wires are cut down by fuse box. Also dont trust PO wire job so will look into it further.
Clock......Will work when I get wire fixed at plug,Wahoo!!!
By checking different circuits and getting one at a time to work helps to eleminate alot of other smaller or larger problems. I dont leave the battery hooked up and when I eventually get everything working. I will leave it outside overnite or while I am outsided all day with the battery hooked up to make sure it doesnt catch fire and burn down the shop. Still along ways from doing that just yet. There is no way I put one in the shop in this condition until it past that test with the battery hooked up outside.

Here is some fine first class crap work I am getting to fix. I was wondering why the domelight wasnt working. Took it out and they used regular spray paint to change the interior and did a bad job at that. They even painted the electrical contacts. I cleaned them off and got the light working, but down by the fuse box, the wiring is cut so now I am wondering how the light assembly is getting power. I will be looking into it later and see what else is needs fixed.

i hate to break it to ya terry the farmers almanac is calling for a colder than normal winter this year YUCK
anyhow good progress on the wiring! i wonder if they just bypassed the door switch so the light would operate only via the switch on it?
paint on the contacts.. yeahhh cheeseball doings there

If Toyota has my exhaust studs, I might get to fire it up today. I need two radiator hoses, and a few gallons of fuel and in theory, it should start. Should????

Toyota had my exhaust studs, but they ordered the wrong exhaust nuts. I only need one so I wasnt going to let that hold me up. I got fuel and radiator hoses and then installed the manifold and things went down hill from there.
I hooked up the battery and then heard a leak. The fuel pump stays on with the key on and I had not hooked up the line to the filter. Didnt loose much fuel but I have a problem with that anyways and will need to look into it.
Thought I would try and start it and it wont crank. I have not been able to find the Clutch Cancel Switch so thought I would just try and find it and start it that way. I am unable to find the plug at all. I have a spare switch, so another problem that needs addressed.
The 85s dont appear to have a Starter Relay like the newer trucks. I am alot more comfortable working on the electricals on those, especially for starting issues. It may just be the battery, but I dont think so. I will charge it again and see if it will atleast crank. It would crank the starter the other day so dont know what went south on this.
I will drag out the manuals (FSM and Haynes) and start studying the electric diagrams and see what I can find out. Electric is not my strongest area, some how I just stumble thru it and make it happen. If I had an 86-88 truck harness, I would be tempted to swap the whole thing, but this will make me learn the 85 electric system so it could turn out to be a good thing. Sure was hoping to hear it fire up. Maybe soon.
Started out great. Added 4 gallons to a dry tank. About half a gallon on ground from not hooking up the fuel line. Doh!!!
Here is a part number for the hose that goes from the Water Pump to the horseshoe water pipe. I will post the Gates Part Number later. Alot cheaper from the parts store then the dealer ship. Just need to cut off the excess. Master Pro 20801.

In the FSM, I see Neutral Start Switch and Clutch Switch, but not the Clutch Cancel Switch. The Clutch Switch seems to be working but I havent ran resistance checks on it yet. Still havent found the Neutral Start Switch. Does anyone one know if the 85 have the Clutch Cancel Switch like the 86 and newer have?
To do:
Test Neutral Start Switch.
Find and test Neutral Start Switch.
Order Thermostat. (Just so I wouldnt forget)

I found out why it would not crank. Yesterday when I was hooking up the fuel line, I must of bumped/disconnected the big white double barrel connector with the single small white round connector that goes to it. Apparently it goes to the starting circuit. (Learned something)
Still need to find out why the fuel pump is staying on and am suspecting it to be in the ignition circuit after to talking to Jason about it. I will start looking into it.
It may not sound like good news but is a starting point and a road I have been down before. I tried to start the truck and it would not start. After trouble shooting it, I found out that I am not getting spark to the plugs. Actually this should be an easy fix as for as not spark. It is most likely a coil or an igniter. I have a spare one or two so hopefully one will be good. I have fixed this problem before so I am not to worried about this part right now.
I have the motor cranking and once I get the No Spark issue fixed, I am hoping it will fire up and run. I know I am getting fuel to the filter at the very least and have been fairly good at getting my timing set close on the first try so after I get fire to the plugs, I have high hopes and think it will run. Time will tell.
I have a 3 day drill weekend so it is going to be awhile before I can get back to working on it. Today it started getting muggy and I just dont want to mess with it while drenched in sweat. I am disappointed of it not firing off, but I am feeling good about it getting closer to running. Yesterday I was concerned about having to get real deep into electrical troubleshooting which can get over my head quick. It will still be a good learning experience and I will learn something off of this problem as well.
My 86 gave me a good refresher course on the systems that I am working on not to long ago, so now I actually feel good at this stage of the game. After I start getting fire to the plugs, I will see if I am getting fuel to and thru the injectors.
