ditchdrift's Freebie 1983 Build Up
#21
I started tearing into it. Found alot wrong with it, only one loose bolt on the starter, so the starter was hanging about 1/2 inch down, positive cable was zip tied to the terminal, all bell housing bolts were loose and the one that was tight had the head broken off, both output flange bolts backed off, no lube in either the case or transmission, input shaft bearing totally exploded in half and the gears stripped. Battery tray totally corroded and bent, an inch of gunk build up all over everything, And the truck is a mess.
Gonna keep cranking away, its going to be a pretty sweet truck eventually...

Well, i found the w56 that i had stuffed in the corner of the shop, so i drug that out, picked up another top shift case for 50 bucks, got a tg doubler adapter for about 200 dollars, found a nice radiator in my stash of parts.... things are coming along!
Nasty radiator
Nice radiator that i hope will fit.
W56 and two cases
Ripped apart the case
Pile-o-junk
Completed reduction box with adapter
Found out that the case i picked up is a early case with the over sized input, so i have to grind down some of the splines. Supposedly slightly stronger than a typical 21 spliner.
This is a true budget build!

Good enough for a beater
Just think, the trans will hold it together as well haha

Lucky for you it's not a pressure bearing part, but there is no way I see this happening on a DD. I have seen it happen to a drag car or two though. One the block the other the trans housing.
This is one reason of the many reasons to run a scatter shield. But not necc on a DD or a wheeler. I don't even think they even make one for any 22r transmissions.
Only thing I can think of is someone either had the motor or trans out at one point and did not have it fully lined up when torquing down the trans housing bolts.
P.S. Was the support brackets on the bottom of that block on both sides?

well, i unbolted the seal housing and it just fell off...
Its been broken a long, long, long time. They replaced all the seals and gaskets on this engine but couldn't stop the oil from gushing out.. the body is all kinda rusted out, but everything under the car is spotless and new looking from all the oil.
