82YOTA14's '82 Toyota Longbed Project

I recently bought a 1982 Toyota Longbed as a project. This is a picture of it the day I got it. The entire bed was rusted through and the tailgate wouldn't even open. The guy I bought it from sprayed black spray paint everywhere he saw rust. The interior of the truck is in pretty good shape and it came with stuff already done to it. It has Detroit Lockers front and rear with an auxiliary gas tank. It also has 4.88's.

When I first got it it had a bad transmission bearing so I bought a kit to replace all of the bearings. I also fixed up some oil leaks it had. To make it look a little better I decided to sand down the wheels and polish them. Now that it runs and drives great, I started working on the body.

I was able to get most of the black spray paint off of the cab. But there is still some of it on the back of the cab that I can't get off. I didn't worry about getting it off of the bed cause I am going to be getting a new one anyways.

I also spray painted the bed to cover up some of the rust and black spots just so it doesn't look too bad while I am looking for a different bed.

I found a new bed for it the other day so I took off the old one and cleaned up the frame then painted it black.

The new bed got undercoated and spray painted yellow until I can paint the entire truck.

It's a 5 speed. I have done some other things to it that I haven't mentioned as well. I got the exhaust done on it and have also put a new deck and two 6's in it. It came with a header and a 3 inch lift as well but the lift sucks. I plan on putting 63's in the rear with a u bolt flip and bilsteins. I haven't decided what to do for the front yet. I'm gonna put 33x12.50x15's on it because the tires right now are 31x10.50x15's and I don't like them. I'm gonna do some stuff to the interior as well like dynamat and put carpet in it. The next thing I'm gonna do is replace the windshield though because mine is cracked and leaks.

Thanks, I found the bed in a scrapyard. It has pretty much no rust, there is just one spot that is easy to fix. I got it off a 2wd and then did some mods to make it exactly like a 4wd.

I started my 63 chevy spring swap the other day. I am using the Skys kit and I also got a U bolt flip kit.

Taking out the old springs.

Got the new mounts on and started putting everything back together.

Did you weld those hangars up before you cut the old ones off? Because I didn't. I have them within 1/16th" of where they should be though, so it's not a problem. Plus I'm building the whole truck anyways. Also, did you take the tank off to weld the other side of that hangar? I see that you got the 1/2 ton 2wd leafs with only 2+ OL. I got 3/4 ton 4wd springs with 4+ OL. I'll probably end up taking one out and just running 3 + OL, since I'm putting a beefy flatbed on.

Yeah I did weld those hangers up before I cut the old ones off. I moved the gas tank to weld the other side of the hanger too.

Here is how my truck sits know with the 63's in the rear.

Got my windshield replaced because my old one had a bad crack across it.

Also picked up a Trailgear classic front 3 in. lift kit that came with high steer and a knuckle re-build kit. Got a carpet kit sitting in the picture that I will be putting in as well, just waiting to get dynamat.

Got the front taken apart and now starting to cut off everything I don't need anymore.

Not sure how I missed this before but your truck has the exact same bumper mine. You can look at my thread and see how I changed mine up.

Getting the spring hanger mounted in the right spot. Pretty easy just had to grind the old ones off.

Starting the knuckle rebuild.

Got the truss welded on it as well.

The new seals and bearings.

Got everything back together and cleaned up.
