So i know there are some Mtn bike riders here. I am making the transition rom road bike. Basiclly because I am in college in Flagstaff, AZ and the roads here are crap, and the road bike is worth too much to ride to school.

So I have decided to start out with something that won't get stolen from school

I ride a 10 year old Trek 930 hardtail with rock shocks up front, I dont do anything nuts but that bike wont die no matter how much I abuse it. Plus its innocent looking enough that it wont be lifted like most of the really expensive ones. I got it as a gift when I was 13 and at that time (1993) it cost 500 some odd dollars new.

 

No pics but I have a 1994 Specialized Rockhopper Comp FS with a Manitou 4 fork. Its an older but awesome bike. You can't go wrong with Specialized.

 

I'm new to to the mtn bike world, but I don't think you can go wrong with a hardrock. I ride this :

Glad to here you're getting into the sport, that was one thing I really miss after moving away from Poenix, AZ. Obviously if you've never gone, try to hit a Supergo store and you'll be in bike heaven. IIRC, there's already a big mtn bike thread on here with pics of everyone's bikes, etc.

You live in a great area for the sport of mountain biking. I drive from California out to Sedona, AZ every-other year to ride. Since most of the trails out there tend to be hard-pack dirt or rock, you'll be much more comfortable on a full suspension bike. I have ridden those trails on my hardtail and I was exhausted after two to three hours. I can last much longer on the full suspension. I would recommend something with travel in the 4-5 inch range.

My bike is a 2006 Rocky Mountain Element 70. It has full XT components with an XTR rear derailleur, 4" travel via a Fox Terralogic front fork and a Fox Float RP3. I can't say enough great things about this bike. It's about the most efficient full suspension bike you can buy due to its rear suspension design, "logic" fork and shock and it weighs 25.2 pounds, which isn't bad for a 4" travel bike. This is my second Rocky Mountain, my first is a 1999 Oxygen Race and it has been a wonderful bike.

I ditched the Eggbeater brand pedals in favor of Shimano SPDs. Much more predicatable.

I would be concerned locking either one of those bikes on any campus.
They would steal the seat alone.

 

What kind of riding are you going to be doing? And enduro is made for more aggressive jumps and drops, a stumpjumper would probably be better off for you since you probably are more used to haveing a super light bike like a road bike. I absolutely love my SJ and i can hit 3-4 foot drops no problem and it jumps pretty good. The handling on on tight rocky fast singletrack is awesome also. I have an XTR rear derailer, fox talas fork, fox triad rear shock(comes on all SJ and specially tuned for the SJ), avid juicy seven brakes, XT cranks, Easton monkey ec 70 bars, odi lock on grips, Sun singletrack rear rim on XT hub, MAvic 317 front rim on specialized stout hub, and more other goodies.Here is a pic of my bike and also check out my video.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mjf1KthXbc

I have the Specialized Hardrock Sport, It's a nice bike -although hardtail- but I do mostly street riding and trails with not so much need for a full suspension. So it suits me just fine......in fact I once put road tires on it and it did fine. I put my knobby tires back on it though.

 

I have last year's Specialized Rockhopper. Just started out so didnt need too nice a bike but for the money its pretty good. Looks nice too.

It takes me a while to get to town though. Unless I go the back road which is mostly down hill. Problem is I can't pedal as fast as the pedals are going The image of going down the long ass hill near where I live on that thing is just funny as hell. Perhaps some day I will try it and video tape it

I ride a Giant Iguana SE, although I can't for the life of me remember exactly what model year it is. I wanna say it's a '99. Rock Shox Jett T2 fork, aluminum frame, mid-grade Shimano components (can't remember what exactly - Alivio and XTR ring a bell). It's served me well lo these many years. First couple years I had it I rode EVERYWHERE, as I didn't have my driver's license yet. Haven't ridden all that much since then, but I try to get out as many times during nice weather as possible.
