restored 4runner turbo with a solid axle

here's the rundown:

1984 4runner that I fell in love with and found out after I bought it that it was a junk bunket. I tore the truck down bare and rebuilt it from scratch into a really sweet rig.

body:
completely redone, not a spot of rust on it, no trail damage, the rear quarters are fiberglass, the tailgate is good and solid. I just had the whole truck painted blue-grey last fall. the paint is really good, but there are two quarter sized flaws in the paint, one is a drip, the other is a fisheye spot and a couple nicks aroud the cowl. the grille and mirrors are new. I was even able to track down a NOS TOYOTA grille emblem for the grille.

armor:
front bumper is an ARB with a fresh Ramsey REP8000 in it. the winch has a built-in control panel on the dash, which is pretty nice. the rear bumper is a Stout Industries tire carrier combo. holds a spare, hi-lift, and a jerry can.

interior:
all mint condition grey SR-5. the front seats are covered in grey leather, I was planning on redoing the rear seats to match. but haven't done so yet. the headliner has a small tear near the map lights, maybe 1" long. carpet is new, and the center console, shifter boot, and shift knobs are new. steering wheel is a factory leather wrapped wheel. manual windows.

suspension:
this is an 84, so it's a solid front axle from the factory. all the steering linkage was replaced with new toyota stuff. it even has the front roll bar on it. very mild lift, maybe 2" total, just to clear the new 32" BFG M/T's on mickey thompson alloys. the axles are geared 4.88.

engine:
fresh built 1987 22rte turbo. maybe 1000 miles on this motor. all the factory defects in the rte design have been addressed, including a 3" exhast system, a .60 trim T-3 turbo, a proper blow-off valve, and an intercooler. you'll notice that the later pics show a black hood with a scoop for the intercooler. I still have the original un-cut blue hood.

everything works. I JUST spent a larger-than-small fortune redoing the A/C system with a new condenser, compressor, valve, drier, and new orings and lines.

I'd like to get $7500 for the truck, which is about half of what's in it.

the all-important pics:

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but that price is kinda high. I know you put tons into it, but you'll never get that back out. I would suggest ebay, you might get a bite.

Oh, nice truck by the way.

Oh, nice truck by the way.

no offense taken and thanks for the compliment on the truck.
like I said, the price is based on half of what's in it. counting up what was in it wasn't very fun

as far as ebay, in the past few weeks, I saw an 'ok' shape 85 turbo truck get snapped up in about 16 hours for the BIN price of $7000, and a really nice 86 turbo truck go for $10,600. granted the 86. granted, the 86 was all original and probably had value to a collector, so I priced mine a lot less than that one and just a smidge more than the 'ok' one.

Are both diffs open?

BTW, that is a steal for a factory SFA rig in that sort of shape.

the truck is at the northern end of NJ by the NYS line. not far from Greenwood Lake

I'll take pics of the undercarraiage and post them.
I was actually holding off on that becuase the front axle is dirty and I was planning on tearing it down, blasting the housing, resealing the knuckles and giving it a fresh coat of paint like I did with the back axle.
I think I know what you're thinking, though: the frame is completely solid, no rust perforation anywhere. even the floor boards are all solid. kinda a big selling point for me when I bought it, given that I'm used to putting my foot through the frame behind the cab on most 2nd gen trucks in the northeast.

the diffs are open. if the buyer wants a locker(s), I'd be glad to install them. I've been setting gears for ten years, so it's no problem.

More wanted (or unwanted) commentary:
How much did you spend on the paint job?
For $7500, I'm looking for a mint 22RTE pick that has original paint in good shape or a truely excellent aftermarket paint job.
Your photos certainly pass the 10' test - and I for one appreciate your honesty in regard to the paint flaws. It looks to me like they didn't paint the door jams.. And when you add in runs in the paint, my guess is that it is a very budget job.. Not what you look for in $7500 4 runner.

Engine.. looks great... I like the intercooler setup. Have any idea what kind of power it puts out?

I'd have to have a look at how well the EFI swap was done.. Everything work well?

I feel your pain in regard to getting 1/2 of what you put into it. I sold a 1981 supercharged pickup, locked both ends, good factory paint, 35s, Marlin tranny, regeared, EFI... for under $5k... I had a box of receipts for that thing over 2 inches thick...

Again, no disrespect intended.. just giving you comments on why I wouldn't pay 7500 for it.. It might do well on ebay if not screened in advance for cosmetics.

Wow, very nice rig. If I had the cash I would buy it. You wouldn't want to trade for a 91 with a 3.4 in it?

Damn I saw the hood & the visor cap & had to check to see if my truck had been stolen...
Nice work & your starting price is reasonable BTW.
If you had sold this around Christmas it would be mine now. Good luck in your sale.

no such thing as unwanted commentary.

the paint cost me ~$1k. the price was negotiated such that I dropped the truck off with all the body work done, they would finish sand, prep, and paint it. then there were the flaws in the paint, I griped, and they balked at responsibilty, becuase I cost them $1k in labor fees for body work. so I chose to live with the two runs and maybe repaint the truck down the road. I didn't want the jambs painted beucase for one, there's always overspray in the cabin or on the trim, and for the other, I was (and still am) planning on stealing a detail used on my wife's new Audi, and coating the jambs with sound deading material (Lizard Skin). I didnt want to pay for paint I was going to cover up. Is the paint perfect? no. I do see your point that for $7500, you want everything to be perfect or perfectly kept from stock. that's the unfortunate thing about these trucks. a real show stopper paint job can run $5k-$8k without even trying hard. maybe justifiable on a Yenko or Shelby that sits in a museum and gets wiped with a diaper like Cameron's dad's Ferrari, but in my book, vehicles are meant to be used, and paint is a wear item just like piston rings and wheel bearings

I haven't dyno'd the engine, but with the bigger wheel/tire combo, the ARB, the winch, the tire rack, 100 lbs of add'l sound deadening material, and the fact that it's a 4runner, it's probably got a 700-1000 lb weight disadvantage to my bone stock 2002 Tacoma TRD with the 3.4L and a 5 speed.
the 4runner pulls harder than the Tacoma. this is more of a torque thing than a top eng power thing, but I'm an anal retentive engineer, so I spent a lot of time researching turbo design and reading compressor maps to get just that effect.

I nterms of the wiring, the truck runs and performs perfectly. I do not tolerate loose ends, hanging wires, or quirky behavior from my vehicles. (again, anal engineer) I chose to re-wire the whole truck rather than do a patch work wire job.

I know what you mean about the money, it sucks that there's just no return on the hobby, but that's ok with me. I love building vehicles, and my wife says it's still cheaper than drugs or loose women
