Well I dont do any off-roading... I was just seeing how people felt about that combo. I know it would be cutting it pretty close, but I really would love to find a set of 15x9s but i havent came across any. The only other sizes ive found are 15x8. And i would really like to get a wider stance.

How much do you figure the 15x8s will make the tire stick out the fender well?

I just hate spending 350-400 bucks for new wheels if I wont get the look I want. Since the stockys on my 4runner is 15x7.

Or what offsets/backspacing do i need to look for to give me that wide stance?

Thanks,
Austin

31x10.50x15 is a good tire size for a stocker. I had 285/75/16s and a 2" body lift on an 87 4Runner I picked up and it was major rubbage when off-road.

oh its not that bad. i ran 33 12.5's on my 87 ifs no lift and it wasnt terrible. they rubbed when i took it off the road but i dealt with it for a while before i lifted it

Hi all,

I've been riding a 87 pickup, 2WD, 4 speed manual, on the stock 14 inch steels at stock height. I'm tired of this grandpa look! I want something a lil more beefy. Whats the biggest tire I'll be able to fit on a 15x8rims with a 4 inch back space? I don't have money to throw on any type of lift, and this is more for looks while driving around town. I'd love to have some fatass tires on these 15inch rims I'm digging http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CRR-3975812/, but I don't want to get into spending what comes with lift kits...

Thanks!

...I would like to mention that I've seen the look of 31x10.5x15 tires and love the look. Is this impossible to reach with out a lift?

NM...I got it...haha

Well I guess I can go that route...buy some used fenders and chop them up. What about the rear? Think I would need to do some cutting there?

Just cut up the ones you have! The BFH is for the firewall. The larger tires will hit when turning. Bj spacers and an aal will run you under 200. Or if its just for looks, body lifts are around 100. a 3" body lift should allow you to run 31s, but I dont have a 2wd so dont go by me.

Also be aware, that body lifts are frowned upon by most people.

Would Lt285/75/R16 tires mounted on toyota steelies (you know the spare tire rim) fit on my 1990 4runner? I have no lift or body lift just curious since someone is selling a set of Bf goodrich all terrains in that size for $250 @_@. Also would i need to regear? Major power loss? My runner is a auto v6 with 4.56 gears. I had 31x10.50R15 on the stock alloy wheels, but took them off for winter and currently running P245/70/R16 (freebie tires from work)..not very satisfied with the way they look...my 4runner looks less beastly now :p

Probably will notice the power drop with the auto.

You'll likely have to flatten the pinch weld to avoid rubbing on the back of the front fender.

You won't see all that much of a difference between the 32 and the 33. With the auto and 4.88's, you will feel quite slow either way. Regearing is a great option.

Just trying to wrap my head around this - how would decreasing the backspacing cause more rubbing or require more lift? I though it actually allowed you to fit bigger tires without rubbing by moving the tire away from the body? Thanks.

There is rubbing on the inside (tires into frame/suspension/steering) and rubbing outside (tires on body).

Think of the front wheel well as an arc, then think of the tire as a cylinder, then finally sweep that tire cylinder about a vertical axis as you steer. Narrow wheel/tire sweeps out a smaller area (distance from steering pivot out to edge of tire is smaller), wider wheel/tire sweeps out a larger area (longer steering to tire distance). Now if either of those swept areas intersect the wheel well arc, you have rubbing. Wider the tire sticks out the larger the area it sweeps out and the more likely the tire is to hit the fender. So it is sort of a balancing act fitting a wheel and tire. Wider than stock tire may need a wheel with less backspacing to clear the frame w/o rubbing but the less b/s, the wider the tire sticks out and may rub the fender.

Case in point, on my '85, I used to rub both 33x9.50s on stock 3.375" b/s wheels. Fit them w/ about a 4" suspension lift:

But also ran 33x15.50s on 10" wide, 2.5" b/s rims. Those took an inch of body lift plus moving the front axle forward an inch or so (on top of the susp. lift) to clear the front fenders:

All that extra lift/work to fit the same diameter tire.

Width:

The generals, not real aggressive tho but would look good

probably 37x1250 with that much lift. might have to trim here and there, but it would wheel like crazy

You're probably not going to be able to fit 33's without rubbing. I have a 3" lift and I am running 33X12.5's and even with trimming and hammering I still rub sometimes when I take it off road. Another thing to keep in mind is the width of the tires. You will probably be able to fit 33X10.5's with some rubbing but I can guarantee that 33X12.5's will .

I would recommend going with some 32X11.5's. They will fit much better than 33's and you probably won't have to do any trimming at all. Just my $0.02
