I know that 285/75/16 Cooper Discoverer STT's with a 3" OME lift will rub the upper control arm. I now need to pick some new rims with 3.5" - 4" backspacing.

I would think the 12.50's will be a little close. You may have to trim the Upper As or use some spacers.

what size gears do you have?
5.29's are recommended for 35's +, if your '81 still has stock 3.90's it is gonna suck.
Also consider upgrading your front axles to a set of longfield axles, stock birfields don't like huge tires, they tend to grenade themselves...
tires rubbing on your leaf springs will also depend on your wheel offset. So if you have something like 2" offset, you will probably be OK with 36's or 37's. but some people rub with 35's...

you might wanna search too, i think this has been asked before...

I had 225/75-15's on my 1990 twd. They were Yokohama AT's and fit fine with no rubbing at all, you might be able to sqeeze a 235/75/15 on it but Im not sure.... Do you have 14 or 15" wheels...guess I should have asked that first

235/75s will rub a lot on a stock 2wd suspension, mine did. 215 or 225/75 will probably be the max on a 15'' wheel but even then you might have to do some trimming and pound the pinch weld flat.
but if its your daily driver and you dont plan on going off road, and you still have the 14'' factory wheels then i would go with a these. they are 27x8.50x14.

Biggest tires on stock runner sr5

Hey guys Im new to yotatech and im sure this is out there somewhere. I just bought a 98 runner sr5 this weekend and want to put some bigger tires on it cuz i hate stock tires. Its all stock. Ive read i can put up to 265/75r15 or 31/10.5/15 on it. Just wanted to see what everyone thought and maybe if you had pics of what that looks like on a stock runner.

I was thinking of getting these.

uh oh.. this question again. well, we usually yell at new people who ask this, (since it comes up 3 times a day if not more) but in your case, since you have a nice rig, ill let it slide. 33x1050 is about the biggest you can go without a lift of some kind... some pounding to the inner fender welds and stuff will allow you to stuff em.

The metric size will be 265/75 on the 16" rim which is about a 32" tire.

I'll be going with my 2nd set of Nittos by summer.
