Just how loud are Mud Terrain Tires?
Hey folks,
I am planning on getting some new tires and they are definately going to be in the 255/85/16 size and obviously my choices are limited. If I want an AT, I have to have the Cooper ST. Other options are Truxus, Maxxis, BFGs, Cooper STT, and a few other brands, but they are all MTs.
I really was liking the idea of the Maxxis Bighorns but I am concerned that the MTs are going to rattle my brains and drive me nuts with noise.
For reference, I am riding on 265/70/16 Pirelli Scorpion ATRs, which I hate with a passoion.
So how loud are MTs for 80% daily driving?

Well, honestly your going to hear the mud tires ALL the time. It really doesn't matter which one you will get...cause you will probably hear them all. The only suggestion I have is just crank up your stereo!

Mud tires sound like an airplane is trying to take off underneath you.
It's not that bad, but you do get some noise, and some vibrations at lower speed, and howling at higher speeds. All tires will be different, tho.

i just got the maxxis bighorns, they are much quieter than my old BFG M/T's, i have never run an a/t to compare to, i would say the bighorns are a low hum if i turn my stereo on at a low to normal level i dont hear the tires anymore. i do 30% dirt road driving about 60 miles a week for my work so i need a good tire and these seem to be it. I would say these are much nicer than the old BFG's

SAY WHAT....????
You'll have to speak up a bit.... I run 35" MTR's on my DD and don't think they are that bad.
However... I do have a loud stereo, so I probably don't notice.
The key is to keep them rotated in my opinion. If you drive around with your windows up you most likely won't notice more than a hum at highway speeds, more noticeable on concrete roadways.

A/T's do have some noise, too, esp when you first get them put on, and the tread is still deep, but they don't seem to vibrate at lower speeds like the M/T's do, and they are much quieter on the road.

I also LOVE the way mud tires look. I want some ProComp Mud Terrains BAD!!! But most all of my driving during the week is on pavement so I got the All Terrains instead. They get the job done when I do go off-road.

My Cooper STT's are not too bad, but my next set of tires will be AT's mostly due to noise. It's not bad, but it gets annoying trying to talk to someone in the car at low volume, or over phone (business conference calls are a nightmare)
(I know I know, talking/driving is bad)

Kumho MT's are what I run.
They are great off road, but L-O-U-D-D-D-D-D
on the road. AT 25 mph, you can start to hear them.
By 50mph, it gets VERY noticable.
If my truck ever sees 65-70mph, they start to flat-out
howl. I've had people with their windows cracked on the
highway in other lanes actually look at my truck due
to noise levels alone. I personally love it, mainly because
I have my Tundra to drive 80% of the time, so when I
drive my 92 its just for pissing people off, or trail riding.

I can hold a conversation when driving down the road in my '81 Trekker with mud tires (33" Toyo Open Country MT's) and the tube doors on. Sure I hear them but to me it is not bad at all. The MT's on my Taco are more of an aggressive AT, a good compromise to a full blown MT, mild mannered but can still pull through some decent mud...

Keep in mind that mud tires get louder and louder as they wear out. When they are new most aren't too bad at all for noise, but wear some down and then you need to crank up your stereo as nearly everyone in this thread has suggested. Or just get good ear plugs, a kidney belt, and vibration gloves and you should be good to go. LOL
Cheers and good luck!
