My Firestone MTs got a lot of nicks and cuts from the Big Bear trip. Also, I lose some rubber off the lugs.

Is this normal? Ahriman has the same tires, and I noticed the same problem with his.

Should I be concerned? Does MT/R have this problem?

 

yeah, chunking is just something you have to deal with when you have MTs

 

Yes that is very normal for tires that have played on the rocks.


EDIT* I should have said any type of tire....

 

I've got the same problems with my MT/Rs, I'd say just expect this to happen.

yes, this is very normal. just a week or so back someone else posted a similar question, and general concensus was - on an m/t, chunking is to be expected.

any tire subjected to uses off road or even crappy roads will exhibit damage.... enough said....

 

Each of my super swampers is missing at least 3-4 whole lugs and at least 5 more are partially gone. Happens with all tires however, the more aggressive the tire the more surface area and access there is to the side of the lug to rip it off.

 

What does it affect when you start chunking? Ride quality? Noise level? traction?

loi, i think you should just donate them tires to me and the wheels

actually just get them balanced and rotated after each run you do. I always do and if your alignment goes to whack after a run, get that done too!

 

It also has to do with the fact they they are a softer compound which is the same reason they wear down faster then regular tires.

 

Don't you think that's a bit excessive? Unless you're losing major chunks of rubber and experiencing vibration, why would you need to do this? I just don't see the logic in the suggested frequency. Sounds more like a waste of money to me.

 

welp I get unlimited balance and rotation w/ discount tire/america tire so i might as well take full advantage

i know loi got it at the same place too so i figure he might as well do the same thing.

 

My tires are siped so I see chunking all over the place
(small bits though)
