I have a set of Crap 265/75/16 Firestone Steeltex A/T that came with my runner when i bought it brand new, so i left them on until i could muster up some money to pick up some real tires. They are terrible, i live in a college town and there are redlights at the top of every hill. When it rains, my back end sits and spins while i try to get through the redlight....worst thing ever. I do a little bit of off roading, and its mostly mucky thick mud, so im looking for a decently aggressive tire, but also one that wont wear too quickly...thoughts on both....and how much you like them....thanks in advance

 

As soon as these tires wear out (that came with my rig) I am getting BFG KO's. I had them on my Taco and they were awesome. They never let me down, and I abused them pretty bad. Now, I may have different needs than you. I wheel in the desert a lot and rarely see mud. When I did see mud, the KO's caked the mud on pretty quickly, but did ok.

Let us know what type of wheeling you plan on doing.

 

Use 4wd when leaving from a stop and shift back to 2wd once you get going again.

 

I've heard the GY MTRs rock off road and are still a decent on-road tire and are better in the wet than the BFGs. Bamachem has had his a while so he'll give you the straight poop,also Lee just got a set the other day.

I off road on either my own land which is farm land and woods, which we made trails on. I also have gone through power lines, and places with decent water...on trail rides for camping on tops of the mountains.....kinda describes the extent of my off roading...its just hard to get out with work and all




Glenn.....I have been shifting from 4wd, backto 2wd,...but honestly, i shouldnt have to do that...these tires i have are a 10 ply tire...they are hard as balls, i keep thinkin softer tires will help grab better. I know my runner has a slighty light rear end which adds to the loss of traction, but still.......

 

I know u had a bad experience with firestones...but their destination mt's are really good (lil' bit squirrely on highways). but great off-road! not too loud either.

Heard good stuff too on the Toyo Open Country MT's as well.

I had the BFG's on my 2nd gen for abouut 7 months and I loved them, I live on a dirt road so they saw some pretty tough stuff everyday. The rock here in Arkansas is mostly flint rock, and with my dirt road getting graded every other week or so a lot of sharp piece gets dragged to the top and give a lot of other people problems...not the case with the BFG's. Althought I will say, in the rain they CAN be a little slick, although I have been known for having a lead foot so if you were take it easy on accelerating then you should be OK with them.

I personally have no experience with the MT/R's but Brian (waskillywabbit) has and I'm sure hed be happy to give you advice on them.

Those will be on my truck shortly since I've heard from Andy (Bama) that they're an ideal DD tire with a nice sidewall and handle mild to intermediate roading very well and I've heard these sentiments from two other guys that have them in my neighborhood.

I currently have the BFG KO T/A's and they do allright on the road, but they really suck in any kind of loose dirt, mud, sand, and the like. When I can, I'm getting the Toyo Open country M/T's.

 

i just got my mt/rs and the number one thing to realize is.. theyre NOISY.

everything else about them (look, feel, traction, etc) is awesome.

 

I swore by my BFG All Terrains. Went through three sets of them before I cautiously tried a set of Yokohama Geolander AT II's. I will never go back to BFG. The Yoko's have MUCH better traction in any situation I've encountered. They don't slip on wet asphalt and are great off road.

 

The Yokohoma and Dunlops are hard to beat off road and on road in wet conditions. Do a search and read the reviews on them. You can't beat the price tag on them either! They also look great and wear forever.

 

Personally, Im a fan of Bridgestone Dueller ATs. They are great all-around road/mud/snow tires. I had them on my '91 4Runner SR5 and that thing was UNSTOPPABLE in the snow. I often never even needed to use 4-wheel-drive untill the snow was deeper than 6".
If you need a little more aggressive tread pattern, go with a set of Dueller MTs.

If you're in the mud much stay away from MTR's, they suck in mud. Great for the rocks though.
