Talk to the guys at shadetreeconversions.com they have done some interesting swap using old tractor engines in some pick-ups getting around 50mpg. They did put a smaller one in a early 80's mustang. Not sure of the mileage results though.

shes almost done, and this took me longer than I thought. It wasnt a direct bolt in, I had to fabricate a bunch of stuff.
I had other projects that took over.
