It runs like a top. Other then the knock I get from a spun crank bearing. The 3vz has a few small problems, but once you sort them it's quite a decent truck engine.
I'm surprised mine has held up so well for so long. I think it's on its best behavior since it's on its way out. Haha

Still researching how i will act as my own broker, this option will save me a couple hundred USD, but could be a headache. Fellow storing the engine doesn't mine it sitting at his place.

Since 2013 these have been shipping to our shores with the 1KD engines....
So not only is this robust Toyota diesel engine found in boats it's also found in fork-lifts in North America. These are certified to pass the Tier 4 EPA standard and the marinized engine is Tier 3 certified. Clearly there are EPA Certificates of Conformity out there somewhere, I just can't find them. And yes I have spoken with the EPA, they will produce the paperwork if i can tell them what engine family number they were tested and certified under...but that is like a winged unicorn.
This also seems to dispell the belief that Toyota doesn't want to conform to the diesel emissions standards here. Oh, and the 2013 engines are CARB certified also.
So yes, I want to put a detuned forklift engine in my truck.....clak, clak, clak...

No real update, but I now own a 2010 Hilux with a 1KD-FTV that has about 70k on the clock. Should be on it's way to me in a few weeks, seller has to crate it. Estimated transit time once shipped is 39 days.

haha, ok maybe I was playing it down a bit. The fact is, I do not have it in my possession, so nothing is concrete, there are many miles between me and this engine at the moment.
It should have read....YIPPPEEEE I BOUGHT A HILUX!!!!
The story goes something like this...
I am a master time waster, whether it be researching mods or dreaming of a new project. Casually I search ebay for D4D or 1KD, and see a few engines newly listed. One catches my eye because it has no bids and will be ending in a few days, not to mention it is very cheap(considering), has low miles, service records and includes a manual gearbox. So I click the watch button.
I notice there is zero bids as the auction draws to an end, I am hesitant to bid and win at this point because I haven't finalized how I will be importing this package, so I contact the seller. He informs me that if I purchase the package for the buy it now price $3kUSD, he will hold the package for as long as I need. At this point the bidding ends, and I give him a deposit to hold it while I frantically search for shippers to give me a quote. DHL is first to reply $800, holy cow this is an awesome price.
Meantime I am communicating with the seller who then informs me that he has the entire vehicle and he will ship me what ever I want, 'will you halfcut it?'...'Mate, its your truck now, I'll cut it or pack it anyway you want!'
I have asked him why this setup was so cheap, if you know what an engine and trans package go for...I'd be impressed if you can find one for under $6k. The truck has full service records, however it cannot be registered for road use because it was an industrial vehicle for mining.
So far luck is on my side, we shall see. I can't say enough good things about the seller, he has really been a stand up guy and patient.

When I was in Afghanistan, I found a 2nd Gen runner (Surf) with the diesel it. Dont remember what size it was but did get the computer (I think it is) out of it. It was rolled on the road side and they just abandon them there.
Seen you mention a stand alone computer. They are not very big. Here is what it looks like. Hard to see the part numbers as it is faded. Looks like 2L-T1 or 2LTI.

Thanks Ian, it will be a few months before I start anyhow.
Terre,
Yep, looks like a 2l, there was a member on here selling a 2l with transmission for $500 in Ohio IIR . 2L, 3L, 5L were diesels, then the 1Kz came out in the 90's followed by the 1KD and 2Kd in 00.

bump.. its been 39 days! I'm very interested in this swap and other methods of engine management (marine, forklift) as that would make it MUCH easier to swap and may not require a half cut.

Well, I'm having issues with the seller at the moment. Not going to get into it here but the deal may be a bust. So I have been contacting other sellers to line up another engine.
An option for engine management is to go full mechanical pump using a 1kz-t pump or a mitsubishi ve style pump from a 4m40t engine making wiring a breeze.
In other news, the 1KD-FTV is being replaced with the next generation 1GD-FTV. this new engine is already available in the hilux produced in Thailand since May 2015. I'm not switching g to the new engine just wanted to post the engine news.

have you considered the marine engine management? I have to imagine it would be beneficial to keep the common rail and electronic injectors as they were designed for this engine and would probably keep it at its most efficient. Did you happen to see/talk to them about that when you were at the boat shop?
