....most Toyota diesel engine swaps die without coming to fruition, leaving pages of unanswered questions and dreams of soot in its wake. Just when you think you have search the entire inter-web looking for more information,…. trying to find problems and solutions so you are as prepared as you believe you can be,….. you find another dead-end thread.
But not mine, no way... I won't let that happen. I want this diesel swap, and it WILL happen. I promise to not leave this diesel swap to perish in unfounded or unresolved internet limbo...

Just playin'. I actually stumbled on your thread by searching for the 1KD-FTV engine in the Googles. Yea, I'm a little late to the party, but I was having too much fun swapping a Mazda RF-CDT diesel into a B2200. Still in the thick of that project, but there is finally light at the end of the tunnel and I'm already doing my research on my next diesel swap.
So, fellow Marylander...what the hell have you been up to? And where's the diesel engine at?!

he just finished doing a 3-link solid axle swap, custom front bumper, wired up some lockers, and is trying to balance his tires. all without a garage/shop. it's still on his list, but money, time, and life.

Working outdoors without a garage/shop in Baltimore? Have all of his tools been stolen? Has he been shot? When's the last time anyone has heard from him?!

Not stolen or shot... Yet. Need to save some money this is an expensive swap. There's a guy in Annapolis that has a runner with a 1kd, I haven't seen it though.

And you will need a 4wd output, assuming its a 4x4 you are swapping into. Plus the fuel cooler, down pipe, intercooler and all intake stuff. Then you'll have to reprogram/sync all the sensors together once installed in the new vehicle. From what I understand only diesel toys can sync the ecu, anti-theft system and sensors together.
Or
You could get a standalone ECU, but they seem to be still in beta testing on diesels.

A little reading on the development of the standalone ECU for the 1KD
http://www.adaptronic.com.au/forum/i...?topic=4772.15
200hp & 383ft.lbs...I could live with that.

Below is a snip from the adaptronicpage
" very very cool stuff Ruud!
I want more!!!!
If i am able to buy a 1KD I'll need a standalone ECU, will I be able to purchase the basmap with the ECU?
thanks,
RB "
Rudd (Adaptronic)
"@ RBx. If you buy the diesel ECU system it will come with a basemap. "
That, ladies and gentleman, is great news.... A standalone ECU is now available for the 1KD. No need for all the silly electricals that need to be programmed by a factory Toyota Euro spec. Now it's my wallet that is holding me back...

I know I may be late with this, but you should be able to get that engine and ecu without going so far as Europe or Australia...
Jamaica is full of 1kd toyota's!
If your still trying to find an engine let me know I could try the scrap shops for a complete engine with wiring. Plus the cost of a ticket isn't too much you could inspect the engine yourself before buying.
Hit me up if you want me to see what's available.

Wow, Never thought of that. I still have to scrap some coin together, thanks for the offer.
Can you post up some personal ads of where I would look in Jamaica for a used car/truck? We have autotrader.com and craigslist.org for things like that in the states.
On a side note, I didn't realize they made the KZ in 04.
thanks,
RB

You are rarely going to find crashed vehicles on these sites but you could look at:
shopinja.com , and
wheelsjamaica.com
Vehicles are very expensive here unfortunately. A used (very clean mind you) 2009 hilux that a friend of mine is selling is going for the equivalent of US$22,000
I'll let you know what price range i find at the engine yards... there's always the insurance write-off's also.
As far as my engine, yep! I'm one of the lucky ones who got the 04 with the 1KZ. But i tell you, i finally drove a manual 1kd and what a difference, it felt so much like my 07 Tacoma X-Runner with the gearing and extra power. Thinking about a possible 1kd swap myself way way down the line.

The way to do the KD swap will be to use a standalone ECU. Easier to wire, and tuneable, not to mention getting rid of the Toyota electronics needing to be syncronized with any new sensor.
There may also be auction sights that sell write-offs, the one I have searched is http://www.coparts.com/, they also have a UK site.
A 09 Tacoma diesel for $22k seems about what you will pay in the states for a non-diesel, so I would say your prices are a bit cheaper. but income in certain areas may make the prices vary or seem more expensive.
I'll check the sites you listed, thank you.

OR
I may go mechanical injection and get rid of all the electronics.
Winch(member) reports 28mpg average on 5:29s and 37s. I confirmed mpg for a standard Hilux with the 1kd is 30mpg from a fellow in Australia that drive one regularly. Of course he gave me litres and KM, so I converted it.
A truck that gets 30mpg, that is fantastic.
I have a line on a 10' Hilux, and am waiting on the import broker to give me accurate shipping...more to follow.

The path of least resistance will be used to get the engine running in my truck. A bridge I will cross when I get to it, which is months away. that may include a marine ECU, or mechanical injection or standalone ($$$)...we will see.
Thanks for the interest guys.
