SWAPPING problem 91 toy 3vze 3.0 into a 95 toy 4 runner 3vze 3.0 excange
ALOHA,I own a 1995 toyota 4runner with the 3vze 3.0 i went ahead and put in a 1991 toyota 3vze engine in it during the swap every thing was pretty much the same exept the ditributor cap and rotor i' m still using the whole harness and computer sys from 95 the only thing i rewired was the distibutor i barly got the thing to start and does not idle at all it seems lilke a air leak or missing almost i trying to go through every thing do ihave to use the computer sys from 91? I would greatly appriciate any help anyone can give me. MAHALO

My guess is that you would want to use the ECM from the '91 on the '91 engine.
I'd double check all the wiring as well, make sure nothing changed between the years. The signals the sensors send and the pins they go to may fluctuate slightly with model years... but that's mostly a guess.

some ideas
A couple simple items that you probably got already. these are some items I ran into when I swapped a 92 for a 93.
1. Check that all the throttle body vaccuum lines are connected or plugged. This could be your air leak.
2. When I set mine up I used the distributor that matched the engine I was putting in the 4runner, just to be sure everything worked out. The shafts are quite. Also, you have probably used a timing gun to check your timing, but before I used the gun, my distibutor was off a tooth. The engine would run/cough for 20 seconds then die. I spend a day looking for a massive vaccuum leak.
Good luck. Just so you are aware, your timing belt tensioner system will be a little different. Buy belts and water pumps for the appropriate year engine.
