Socal 3.0 to 3.4 swap..
Im in Socal and tired of this POS 3.slower than hell...
its on its 3rd headgasket and about to die..
i really want to go 3.4 but it would be a little easier if there were someone local in socal i could bounce ideas off/ tech in case i run into something unexpected.. etc...
Anyone in the Socal area?

yer in Temecula, scuba? I've got a buddy or two down there. I'm in Glendale so you know how that goes, 15 minutes with no traffic, 2 hours with traffic. I'm no 3.4 swap vet, but I'd be happy to pitch in wrench time to get a better look at the swap first person.

Azusa - If you want to see a swapped 3.4 up close and personal I can set aside a Saturday for you to check mine out. You can take all the notes & pictures you want and I can show you whatever documentation I have.
One issue you really need to consider is smog. Regardless how it is done in other states, California is strict when it comes to engine changes and you will not be able to get your vehicle registered if you do not pass the referee.
If you do the swap you won't regret it. It cost me more than I wanted to spend but the end result it worth it and I would do it again.

The only mention of BAR office closures is here: http://www.dca.ca.gov/, and nothing about referee contract suspension. Last year the referee program was suspended and I had to wait a couple weeks until it was reinstated to get my swap inspected.

at least thats what i heard.. that ca hasnt had a ref since the middle of last year. my buddys girlfriends' uncle is duncan hunter, so she knows a bit more about stuff than most of us. and according to my buddy, who swapped his del sol engine for a 3.0 Vtec (ricer, i know, but damn does the thing fly!) without the ref, you dont need to get it inspected, it jsut has to pass visual smog. i will look into it more and let you guys know

The referee program is NOT suspended and is currently active. I called their number 1-800-622-7733 and confirmed this with one of their agents this morning.
The referee contract was only suspended for a short time last year. Once the funding was restored the referee program was reinstated and I was able to make my appointments with the ref.

A basic overview of engine changes in California. BAR is really the place to ask questions about the smog & referee program.

Thanks for the clarification cadman. I still have a while before I "HAVE" to deal with this but I'm not willing to walk blindly into a $&!# storm with out eye protection....
