Weird noise coming from the rear end - HELP!!

A gal at my work has a 2001 Limited 4Runner… she asked me this morning about a “noise” that her rig is making… here’s what she told me…

“When I am going to down the freeway and get to about 60 mph, I hear a “thumping” noise that sounds like it’s coming from the rear. It’s not a constant noise… just every now and then.”

DO you guys have any ideas??? I am trying to help her out – it’s hard to not be in the car to hear it, but I thought I would ask you guys/gals and see if you had any thoughts – or maybe this has happened to your rig… HELP!!!!!

Drive it with the windows down yourself to help to better pinpoint the sound,
then post back with what you've found.
At this point, all that can be given is an uninformed, hypothetical answer, e.g., "the rear end is dry"..."a busted, yet only loose universal"..."one of the 'shields' has come loose". There's simply not enough to go on.

No prob...Another suggestion would be that you try looking the issue up with the Search feature, as there may be more insight there...Good luck.

Sounds like a balancing problem with one or both of the tires. Ask her if the noise is accompanied by vibration in the seat.

I will ask her when she gets back from lunch... but with a balancing issue like that - wouldn't the noise/vibration be a little more constant?
