relocating Oil Filter 2001?
hey! any of you guys / gals moved your OF to a new more accessible location (a la PP kit or other?) Where did you put it that is safe and accessible. I have a 2001 3.4L 4WD.
Thanks for the input!

I think the most common place is to install the relocation kit in the forward area of the driver's wheel well (3rd gen). I believe they moved the canister inside. Someone installed it on the inside of the wheel well in the engine compartment and was a nice installation but a lot of work. I liked it. I'll look for pics. Gadget has a dual filter setup under the drivers seat area of the chassis. He said it was an awfull lot of work though.

I have a '97 and plan to do this mod this fall or next year. I think I'll be relocating mine into the engine compartment though. I don't really like it being in the wheel well myself, but that is certainly a popular choice for many.

I've decided to switch to Mobil1 and run a really high quality oil filter (K&N or Mobil1) to stretch oil change intervals to 7500 miles rather than screw with the relocation kits.
NWOR has some trick kits though with stainless oil lines and dual filters. If you have to move it look into those.
good luck

Ok, getting to the oil filter when I couldn't get my front skid plate off was close to impossible. But it really isn't that bad when you take off both skid plates. As it has been suggested, take them off as one unit - much easier. Then no need to relocate I don't feel comfortable putting an oil filter in the wheel well, it seems like you are asking for trouble. Just my $.02

well, changed the filter - thru the driver's side wheelwell. What a pain! Those little clips aren't gonna last long - guess I better stock up on em.... Glad it's only an every 6 month thng but sure wish I could find a nice protected, convenient place to put the filter But then again, I bet getting the relocation plate on there would really be a bitch!

Oil Filter relocation kits
Also now using synthetic oil and stretching the oil change interval a bit..
Unless the oil filter relocation kit used stainless braid hoses, or top quality (e.g. aeroquip http://www.aeroquip.com/ ) I would be a little leary of them..
A hose rupture could be bad news.. not only for the engine, but if motor oil ever hit the catalytic converter, almost a guaranteed fire... (probably not likely with the cat on the opposite side, but not a failure I'd want to chance..
