Oxygen Sensor Question
Ok,
So my '90 Toy P/U has a massive exhaust leak around the o2 sensor because of a missing nut, and the gasket is no longer with me either... It has rusted away. And, along with that there is a sizeable CRACK in the exhaust piping a bit before the actual mount. Now, my theory is: Jack-support the tranny, drop the crossmember, drop the exhaust pipe, 2 new nuts and an o2 sensor gasket, prepare and WELD the crack shut with a welder(duh, what else with?), clean the threads to the mount points and ˟˟˟˟˟˟ fix it.
Now, am I wrong? Will this work? And do you think the massive exhaust leak hurts my 22re's performance(power and/or economy)? I was told to just bite the bullet and take it to a muffler shop, but I work at a garage, therefore I am well-versed in how much I might be ripped off(i.e. labor costs, over-priced parts, etc). Also, do you know of any way that I might damage the o2 sensor with this? I plan on removing the o2 sensor before I repair the crack as well.

If the exhuast is leaking before the pipe and at the o2 sensor it will be reading wicked lean and telling the ecu to really turn up the gas. That in turn makes the engine run rich which in this day and age of gas prices isn't good not to mention washing down the cylinder walls, fouling plugs, loading up the cat with unburned gas possibly etc. Lets not forget the effect the fumes are having on you!
If the pipe is cracked and the nut is rusted off I'd say it's time to bite the bullet and in the least buy some new pipe or have a muffler shop do it. It likely won't stand up to welding anyway.
You can buy complete aftermarket kits and install them yourself. It might be an opportunity to go to a bigger diameter pipe to let the poor little 22re breathe a little better.
