Question Clay bar - can someone help me out?

Okay, so I guess in order to do the clay bar thing you need a lot of water or polishing fluid?

I have a Mother's showroom spray and Mother's claybar that I'll be practicing over the roof of my truck.

Spritz, spritz, wipe the bar down? Is that it? Do I mash the bar down as I swipe? Or do I just hold it down?

Probably a stupid question but I'd rather get it right now instead of later AFTER I mess up.

Thanks!

No need to mash it down. You don't need alot of pressure. But yeah, the basic idea is spray the bar and the area of paint, then run the clay bar over it. You'll be able to feel it picking up the grit. When its smooth, move to the next spot.

Every once in a while, re-work the clay in your hands, fold over the dirty section and keep going.

You'll love the results!

Come to think of it....Corey et al., using the PC clay holder...do you stop to fold over the clay or do you just put it in the holder and do the whole car?

Yep spray the section and rub it on the paint, no need to put pressure on it.

If you drop it on the ground, throw it away, or the small rocks will scratch the crap out of your paint!!

Use LOTS of lubricant. I use a bit over half a Mother's squirt bottle on one vehicle. Apply and remove in the direction of air flow, little pressure, small sections at a time (don't let the lube dry), buff with 100% cotton towel. Follow with polish and wax, re-wax a week later, good to go.

Peter, you will not be disappointed, the results are amazing. Come to think of it, I need to clay my 4Runner too.

Some of the patrol cars at work went in for long due detailing a few weeks ago - I saw faded black come back shiny and smooth... yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to the results!

Tom,

With the PC you can see a swirl in the clay of the crap it's picking up. I pull it out and fold it over two or three times doing the whole truck.

Thanks Woody. Although I don't have a Corey Cable yet, I can now file that away in the "things to remember for the 4Runner" folder.

I use the clay bar by hand instead of the griot's holder. i didn't find it easy to work with and I could not get into the crevices easily. also, that dang thing wouldn't stay in the holder and i used THREE claybars in there.

peter, my advice is to do it by hand. after dawn-ing your truck, leave it wet. you won't have to use nearly as much of the fluid as you would if it were dry. also as the other guys have said, fold it over and over. a little dirt or rock will do some damage.

Since I have a white rig, I never have to fold the clay bar over.
I use the Griot's one as it's the biggest bar on the market, and makes a nice burger size patty for the buffer.

I find using the clay bar holder for the bar I can do the whole rig with ease.

I have got to the point now with the PC where I can clay, and wax the whole rig and not have to do any part by hand anymore.

You can also use the clay bar holder by hand if you don't have a PC.

Corey,

Did you ever get the Griots wax removal bonnet to work with the PC?

I tried using it to remove the BOS the last time I waxed and could not get it work well. I tried various speeds with the PC to no avail.

Any advice? I'd really like to get it to work as removing the BOS by hand is alot of work in this heat:cry:

Hi Woody, no I have not tried it again.
I probably won't, as it's not worth the frustration to me.

I don't mind taking it off by hand.

Yes, the BOS dries quick.
I found out last time though by laying down a thinner coat this time it was easier to take off.
I was putting to much on.

Corey,

Why is it color dependent? I thought you just folded the wax over to keep the clean wax on the outside, sort of like how they tell you to constantly turn the rag over when you're taking wax off.

My paint never gets contaminated enough, and faded being white.
When we did Todd's rig last year, we had fall out coming off, and old oxidixed paint too.
The clay bar turned black.

White is the easiest color to take care of.
When I do mine, the bar hardly get dirty at all.

I did mine a few nights ago - it turned grungy, so I pulled it out and folded it over a few times. Made a big diff. Now, I just finished the Machine Polish 2. Need to do the #3 then BOS. I found the same thing about using too much. I used way too much MP2 and it was almost impossible to get off. Now I hardly use any and it's looking great. I've been doing a little each night, so it's taking an eternity.

No, but you might want to try GS27 for that.
