Swap in Progress 1994 4wd/AT 3.0~3/4
New to the forum ~ but been lurking for over a year now. I am in the mid to final stage of a 3.0/3.4L engine swap. Once I figure out how I'll post pictures of the progress I'll put them up. Most of all my questions were found in the forum, and from earlier post reading ( stickies etc ) all ( very helpful. As a matter of fact if it weren't for this forum I would not have taken on this project.

early pics
Front view of 1994 4 runner w/engine out. I looked into a possible 3.0L head gasket replacement, but gave up on it quickly. A month after prepping the engine for removal I found a rolled 1997 4 runner 3.4L 2 wd on Craigslist 138K miles in running condition. $ 750. Had the chance to hear it run prior to purchase. Full donor vehicle in hand

Engine bay ready to receive
Once the engine was pulled, I took some time to clean up,primer and paint the engine bay. On the battery side there had been times where battery acid leaked down and made a mess of the inner fenders, high side AC return line, windshield washer reservoir etc. I also took the time to swap the battery tray from the donor 97 and install mounting pins for the air box per DNTSDAD. A few weeks of work and it's ready to go.

t100 ECU
Vital22 you caught me in the nick of time. I had a 97 4 runner 4 wd ecu in my sights on Ebay. I quess I am looking for essentially the same year class ecu but a T100 model w/ AT & 4wd? I expect then i'll need to be looking at the wiring diagrams from that as well ? The 3.0L transmission had some prior service to it with non-factory rtv on the end plates, pan gasket etc. I expect it had been recently overhauled. I did notice one thing in the transmission wiring and plug ( three prong ) that plugs into the back of the tranny ( above the drive shaft ) is missing. Not sure of the function but expect I'll have to find one. The wiring harness extension on the top of the 3.0L tranny also shows a couple wires cut from it. I think these are one in the same

Cross Over Work
During the crossover conversion I used a Metabo 4" right angle grinder w/zip disk to cut the welds away from the flanges. One section at the outlet portion was not accessible to the grinder. It was also to tight to effectively cut it with a hacksaw. What worked for me was to cut the width of the hacksaw down to with-in the gap near the welds. picture pretty much explains what I'm describing. Hope this helps

Air Filter Box Modified and installed
Re-used the Air Filter Box from the donor 4 Runner. I modified it slightly so it would set in closer to the inner fender. Inside the Filter Box is a reinforced grid system. I decided to drill the centers out on each of the grids to give and even flow of air into the filter housing. I installed a stainless steel mesh to keep insects/rodents out.

Aisin Hubs, New CV boots, bearings, grease etc
While waiting for parts to come in I broke down the front end drive line assembly. New CV-Boots, bearings/seals repacked or replaced, rotors turned and to top it off a set of rebuilt Aisin Hubs.

On to the Exhaust
I forgot to mention earlier in the thread my plan was to keep this not necessarily low budget but manageable. I am fortunate in that I work with a group of really good TIG welders so I decided to see if I could use some/most of the donor vehicles exhaust system. Starting with the exhaust outlet flange/cat converter I managed to cut/tack/TIG in back together as to sit along side the transmission and frame member. It's at an angle but has ample clearance on all sides. I used the donor floor pan heat shields where I could ,and put in a high temp ceramic insulator pad between the cat and the floor pan. This of coarse is a pic of the cut off but will show a pic

Jason ~ the post about your conversion was short and i can see how you may have missed it. 5.3L conversion should be plenty of HP Interested in seeing how it works out for you.

resistor for tach
I am in the wiring stage of the conversion, and have a question. Does the resistor for the tach need to be put in if there is no Tachometer Gauge ? Or does the resistor serve another purpose ? thanks
