Go from a 6 to a 4 cyliner?
Hi everybody! Been looking for a clean runner for about a year now. Well I actually found the one that I think I want except for a few small details. I wanted one with "0" rust and found it. The only thing that I can pick on is the runner is a 6 cylinder with blown headgaskets. The owner said that its all original with good options...power everything so he says. I have heard that toyota had a recall on fourunner headgaskets but I'm not sure about he years involved. By the way this runner is an 1988. So my question is what would involve a swap to a 22r engine. Could it be a dropin replacement with no other modifications? The only reason I'm considering this is because I don't hear many good things about the 3.0 v-6. No power terrible gasmileage and headgasket issues. One more quick question... Are there any aftermarket company's that make OEM componets for these cars. Such as carpet, moldings, interior pieces and exterior pieces? I've done some searching but haven't had much luck finding anything other than a few items on ebay. Thank you for your time.

22re would be an easy swap, only a couple of problems, make sure you get a 22re from the same or close to the same year runner/truck and hte motor mounts may hang you up, the only reason i say this is that i know when swappin a 3.so to a 7m you have to build new mounts and when going from 22r to 7m you dont you just use the 5m mount brackets, do some research and see if the mounts are really that different, otherwise with the right harness and computer its just plug and play!!!

i think the accessories are different but there are stock lines to go to the accessories so i dont think it would be that big of a problem, shouldn't be any custom work involved

I doubt that going 22re would be easy, considering you're probably going to need to make new motor mounts and a crossmember, plus get all the electronics from the 22re to work. You will also need a new transmission, since they don't bolt up the same, as far as I know.
A better bet, and is almost a direct bolt in with fewer mods, is a 3.4 5VZFE engine from a newer Tacoma/4Runner/T100. Check out http://www.offroadsolutions.com/ for more info.
