1GR-FE swap

hey guys new here so be nice haha

I have an 84 2wd yota prerunner that just blew up (little 22re). i have always wanted to do a 3.4 or 1uzfe swap and now is my chance. i was looking into the 3.4 stuff and someone has now talked me into the 1GR 4.0. i know i will have no problem doing the physical swap but i was hoping for some help on the wiring. the biggest issue is im in CA and it needs to be done smog legal. i can get my hands on a newer tacoma (not sure on exact year) with 10k miles on it. it is wrecked the the entire interior, motor, trans etc is fine.

is it possible to keep the OG 84 dash etc and get all the gauges to work? speedo seems like it would be interesting being mechanicle. how about getting the AC to work?
help from anyone that has done this would be greatly appreciated.

the 4.0 is a tough swap. Lots of custom modification and fabrication.

as far as i know.. it has to have all the emissions components. The exuast has to exit the same side as the donor. You'd have to find a complete donor. And as far as the speedo and dash, go youd have a check engine light for the trans and the traction.

pretty sure there is no laws in CA about the exhaust having to exit the same side, ill look into that though. i am going to have the entire donor truck and will install the trans out of the donor truck to get it past the ref inspection. if it comes down to it i could run the 6spd most of the time but put the auto in for smog checks if i cant get that to work right.

i know that one person on here that did this swap swapped in the gauges and everything out of the donor, wonder if there was a reason.

Lets start with realistic ideas.

First, can you weld. If no, do you have a LOT of money to throw away?

Second, are you REALLY good with wiring? If not, do you have a lot MORE money to throw away?

Third, Do you have a lot of money to throw away?

Not trying to discourage you, but I see these threads all the time and 90% of the time its someone looking for a quick fix, without thinking of the money needed for such a swap. 3.4L is going to be your best bet IMHO, as many people have done this swap and there is a LOT of info out there. Typically, if you have to ask about how to get things like the speedo and AC to work, its out of your element.

yes i know how to weld (why i said im not worried about the physical swap) and im semi good with wiring. the reason i asked about the speedo was because the factory speedo is mechanical (gear and cable in the trans) but the new truck and trans is all electric, wondering if anyone knows how to make the stock one work. as for the AC, i read something about that being a problem in another thread.

one of the reasons im leaning towards the 4.0 is i plan to race locally. the class i want to race is limited to a N/A v6. having the 4.0 gives me a huge advantage over the 3.4 and ford motors.
