The van body is too far gone to do anything interesting with. I like the thing. It's fun to drive and I can park it anywhere and not worry for a second about it getting broke in to.
I just built a back bumper for it. I did it kinda quick and dirty but it works. I was driving on the highway and I heard a noise I look in the rear view mirror and the back bumper was sliding down the highway and slid off onto the edge. I figured it was time to fab one up.
The van has a new motor and tranny. You wouldn't think it did by the way it looks.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like that anymore. The sea spray is having its way with my truck.

From the pics, it doesn't look like you have plated the frame at the PS box mount. I would consider doing this in the near future.

I did do that after those pictures. I lost the little bolts for that and I had to get some more.
Thanks for the heads up though!!

Man, I love a volks van... a totally unheralded, yet fabulous driving machine.
Also surprisingly handy to drive. Hope it lasts you a long time.

I would get out the spray cans of rustoleum paint, and start going to town, on that body though.

The body is too far gone I am afraid. The front looks like its red its so bad. I did manage to get everything working in it lights, heater, stereo. It is kind of fun to drive.

Wheeled a little today. Not too much. I took a lady friend of mine out even got stuck once and had to tug it out.
We came upon this little fire going. Probably some bear hunters. So we got out and warmed up.

It is obviously a painting... he had Picasso on the brain.
The image on the left is a man's face, with various animals and a clock image in it. I am not sure of what painting he was thinking of, on the right. It could be a cartoonish rabbit, laying face up, or face down, in the snow, not sure yet...

I probably would have too!

Great build - just read through the whole thing. I know I have seen it before but worth rereading.

Hey!
Haven't looked at this threrad for a bit and noticed two things:

The difference in your springs and mine is impressive/interesting.

And this should be in the next YT calender. Great shot.

yes mine are much shorter. I ordered them that way. I didn't want to go too tall on my build.
you can see the difference in this little mud vid...

Yeah, I remember we had different goals with our builds. That looked nice and stable as you zipped through there. Good job!

Oh yeah!! My little truck is a TANK. I actually had a few better wheeling runs that day but didn't get them on video.
The truck is super stable and balanced. It is a bit lower than most of the SAS builds but I built it to be a trail rig rather than an all and all out rock crawler. However, it does that pretty well too.
