FJ60 fronts are 3" wider than mini truck fronts. they use the mini truck long shaft and an FJ40 short shaft. so the diff is closer to the center of the axle. its sprung under and uses the standard old style land cruiser diffs w/9.25" ring gear IIRC.
the GM 12-bolt is a cast style housing like dana axles. its a 30 spline axle with a 9" ring gear. its pretty much equivalent to a ford 9". the 12bolt is a c-clip axle so a lot of people will shy away from them, but putting the toy axles and tube ends on makes them a non-clip axle. ill be doing it all from junkyard parts.
since you are considering an SAS at the same time, if it were my rig i would:
pull a d60 rear from a 3/4 ton ford
pull a 44 front from a 3/4 ton chevy
get sky's full width SAS kit and go. with V8 power, i would definitely put a 60 in the rear. for 35-37s the 44 should be fine, if you go bigger down the road, a chevy 60 front is a bolt in deal. you will need 8-lug rims unless you go with a 1/2 ton chevy front and convert the 60 rear to 6-lug ($$$$$$).

I fitted a Dana44 to my 4Runner so I could then fit a Detroit Electrac.

I bought this 1998 Isuzu Rear Dana 44 Axle in May of 2006. I Cut/Cleaned it up in May of 2006 as well. It now sits waiting in limbo, if the Toyota 8" rear in my 1999 4Runner goes out "again" (Rubicon), this Dana 44 axle with a large R&P will replace it to match the front Dana 44 axle I have on the vehicle already.
Stock 1998 Isuzu Rodeo Axle with link and coil mounts.
After plasma cutting off all the "junk".
After complete clean up, we now have a 63" WMS to WMS Rear Dana 44 Axle that will work with the FJ-62 rear leafs installed on the rear of my 4Runner.
For reference that is a 79-85 Toyota 8" rear axle tube under it.
This axle does have disc brakes and small drum parking brakes in the center of the rotors. Just like the FJ-80 and 03+ 4Runner.
This axle also used Heavy Duty Gears, which are gears in the lower 3.90, 4.10, 4.56 carrier size, but still used the smaller 3.70 and down carrier. You can get the larger carrier and put the lower ratios in. I will install if/when the time comes 5.38.
Oh yeah, it currently has 4.10's and a Dana Trac-Lock Limited Slip Diff.

yeah, the 79-85 toy rears only have 2.5" tubes. the 86+ ones have the larger 3" tubes.
steve, does the isuzu rear use metric or SAE studs? not that its hard to change them out or anything

do you run abs steve? how would one sensor vs 2 like on it stock work? can you get 4.88 in that housing?

My 1999 4Runner no longer has ABS, it has the front of the base model 4Runner Non-ABS and the rear of the ABS 4Runner, which is a single line. In layman's terms I have a stanadrd non-ABS system without the lame LSVP valve in the rear. Manually set proportioning valve in the middle to balance the GM Calipers and Toyota Drums.
Yeah you can get 4.88's for a Dana 44. But Dana 44's have multiple carriers, one for the taller gearsets and one for the lower gearsets. Not like the Toyota diff that only has one carrier.

I would go with the Mini, after the diamonds. Keeps it all Toyota, with longfields its hella strong, and there is loads of info on this site and others that can help you as far as getting it to work with your truck. The other axles are great too, but just require more BS to get under the truck.
