Opinion on a Truck

One of the Xterra guys found a truck and emailed me with these questions:

"I know that the 84's have carbs on them still, but do most of them still have the solid front axle? I am considering purchasing this one on EBAY

Here's the Truck

It is a local truck, and looks to be worth taking a look at. Does around $2000 seem like a descent deal? Are there some common things I should look for on a Toyota?"

I would have let him post the question to you guys, but with the auction ending in 3 days I thought I would get the ball rolling.

Thanks,
Steve

All Toyota 4x4 84s have straight axles. Look for frame rust under the bed and body rust everywhere. That's about it. The Pre 86 trucks make excellent platforms to build on without throwing $5000 in mods at them. A dual transfer case, shackle/add a leaf lifts, longer front drive shaft, tires and a locker of some sort are all you really need to run with the big dogs on the big rocks.

If it has power steering, no smoke from the motor, Hubs, tranny and transfer working properly, and no frame rust, i'd say $2000 is a fair price for both buyer and seller.

I didn't read the whole ad at first, It looks to be already built except for lockers and winch. For $2400 or so, I'd spring for it without hessitation, if I were in the market for another toy.

Some of the late 84's did have EFI, not too common though
