Question New Shocks Necessary with Downey Coils?

I just picked up the Downey HD 1.5" coils for my '90 4Runner and want to put them in but I don't have longer shocks yet. I'm planning on getting some better shocks next week but I want to know if I can install the new springs with the stock shocks still in place in the meantime.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Warren, I ran stock length shocks in in '91 for a few months before switching over to my Edelbrock shocks.

I believe the Edelbrocks are also stock length, so no worries.
Here is a recent picture of me testing out my Hi-Lift jack.
The rear tire was about 1/2" off the ground, and the shock was not even extended all the way.

Here is a picture of how your rear end will sit with the Downey rear HD coils.
Your front T bars may need to be cranked afterwards to bring the front up a bit to match the rear.

I do not have the stock T bars on now though due to the increased weight of the ARB bumper & winch.
I switched over to SAW 25mm T bars. They should only be used if you have a lot of weight up front.

If you crank the stock T bars and you have the ADD system and not Aisin manual hubs, do not crank 'em more than 14.5" from the top of the wheels lip to the bottom of the fender opening.
Here is a good article written by Chris Geiger of All Pro Off Road when he had his 2nd gen 4Runner on doing the T bar crank.

You will need to get your front end realigned after doing any messing with the T bars.
Most tire & alignment shops will do a crank for you included in the price of an alignment.

I also recommend if you do crank, switch over to the Aisin manual hubs.
They can be found at wreckers yards from between $50 to $150 a pair.
I have some articles on my home page in the mods section on how to take them apart and clean them too before putting them on your rig.

Just the stock IAS Performer ones. They have come out with a newer one that I think is single or monu tube. Not sure. I am not even sure which mine are. I use to know, but forgot.
All I know is they are the above mentioned ones.

I ordered them from Perf.
They just had a 15% sale too. You may still be able to get a deal if you ask for it.

Oh, welcome to the forum too

Hi there, just really echoing what Corey has already said,

I had my +2" HD Coils fitted in my truck for about 10 months before getting some Procomp ES 9000 shocks so you should be good to go for at least a couple of weeks

Luke

PS for pictures of springs/shocks check out my webshots pictures!

Coils

Thanks again guys,

Popped the springs in yesterday aft. Besides a few stuck nuts it went well. I found that removing the Sway - Bar attachment and having a buddy push down on the drum really helped pop the springs in.

Looks great by the way!

Take care.

Thanks Phil, I try and keep it well maintained.
Stay tuned...Just got done working several hours on a new mod so to speak.
It's more of a maintenance mod though.

I'll have pics up before I turn in tonight.
