Street legal aux lighting?
I want to put a set of lights into my moms truck, the stock headlights SUCK.
So I want to rig it up so its 100% legal for her to use on the street, not like my current setup.
What kind of lights should I get? Hoping to keep the price under 100 bucks if possible.
I was thinking driving lights as it would throw light really far forward, I will be mounting them on the bumper (2wd truck).
thanks for the help guys.

First thing I would do is check the voltage at the back of the existing headlight:

Might be the reason the existing lights are not as bright as you want. If the voltage is low, consider upgrading the existing wiring:

Then consider putting in a set of H4 housings and try some brighter bulbs. A good housing will throw a better light pattern and with the H4 bulbs, you can get a good selection of bulbs:

Advantage of making the existing headlights work properly is that you don't have to fiddle with extra switches and running new wires, etc.

you don't want a "driving" beam to use with your low beams, most driving lights are a flood or spot light with lots of "spill" to the beam, they are meant to be used with your high beams, you should be looking for a fog type beam that has a more controlled cutoff to avoid blinding other drivers, also a fog pattern will be wide and will illuminate the road sides better

hella 500s. they come with 55w bulbs so that makes it legal, around here at least, there are certian height restrictions as to where they can be mounted but put them on the bumper and you should be ok. and you can get them for $60 off porc so thats right in your price range too.
you should check your local laws on the subject but i have a set i just put on my bumper and they are quite nice compared to my stock headlights.

The 500's are not legal here. They need to be DOT approved stuff.
All trucks like hers have the crappy lights, so I just want to add some extra fogs. I am going to wire them into the light switch so they turn on when she turns the lights off and so on..
Truck is a 89 2wd f-150

i believe the DOT states that any auxillary lighting should can be on with highbeams, but should go off with the low beams...but check out some good hella or piaa fog lights...

It depends on the type of light. I know with the Hella wiring instructions, you are supposed to wire the fog lights to only work with the low beams and go off with the high beams on. I think driving lights are supposed to work the opposite way. You can check your state vehicle code (usually on-line) to be sure.
