Engine Stall when clutch engaged

Hello all,

I'm having some electrical problems that I'm chasing around the truck, but this one has really got me stumped.

Truck: '86 Pickup SR5, 22R engine

Problem (I'll give a few examples):

When I start the truck I rev the engine a bit. With the clutch still engaged, if I let OFF the accelerator the engine will idle all the way down and stall out.

This problem continues while driving. I have to keep the engine reved or it will die.

While driving, when I go to shift, (engaging the clutch) I will hear a sort of "low click" noise, just once. It sounds exactly like the sound when you turn the key and the engine doesn't fire.

It will make this noise, and if I don't shift fast enough, it will stall out. It's especially dangerous while driving because it takes away my power steering also.

This continues to happen the whole time I'm shifting. Whenever the clutch is engaged, if I let it, the truck will stall out. So whenever there is a stop sign, or light..... stall out.

The engine also stalls, if I'm more or less coasting and the tacometer gets around 1800 rpm.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

sounds like u need to do a little work on the carb and clean it and see if u can adjust the idle a little, also check ur timing and see if its off.

The 22R is fuel injected.

I'm going to replace the fuel filter tomorrow and see if that helps.

Any other suggestions besides timing?

Had a similar problem, my truck would die but only usually when shifting from 3rd to 4th. Turned out my idle was set too low. 22RE have a simple screw adjustment to tweak the idle, should be just about 750rpm at idle. Reset my idle and problem was solved. Worth a check.
